I've owned a D3 A8L 4.2L, D3 A8L W12, 2 B5 A4 V6s and currently am an owner of a MKVI TDI Jetta Sportwagen, I offer the following:
1. Buy a cable and VCDS from Ross-Tech. You will use this so regularly it's not even funny.
2. Buy the Bentley Manual.
3. Buy an Ultrabook to use VCDS and install the digital Bentley Manual on. You want an Ultrabook since its lighter and you want a dedicated rig...
4. Assume the Service Position. VAG loves to make access require body panel removal.
Objectively my A8L W12 was the worst vehicle I've ever owned. I've had a car catch on fire and burn my leg and I'd rather have that again than either of my A8s.
I'm looking to enter the super car world in the next year; and I'm looking at Aston Martin DB9s and Maserati Granturismos because they easier to work on and less needy than my A8s were; which gave my PVWTSD.

If you want a BULLETPROOF supercar, absolutely go get a McLaren 650S. Not only a ton better looking than an R8, they perform equally, if not better. The prices on 650s is also a huge benefit; a 2015 is like $150k.
As soon as I get all my extra bills paid off (garage not build yet, wife's Lexus) I will absolutely get a McLaren 650S. Keep the Jag, of course.

I have driven the R8 a few years ago and really liked it, and I used to track my former business partner's v8 S5 6spd. all the time, and loved that car. But what I find the difficult part of getting in and out of modern day supercars is that the rockers are so gigantic that you need Moses to part the Red Sea to get across them, making it uncomfortable for ingress and especially uncomfortable getting out. My Pantera's rockers are smaller than those in my XKR, and even though the car is only 43" tall, and I'm 6', getting in and out isn't that bad once you've folded yourself into a pretzel.

Yeah, I was lucky enough to drive a turbodiesel R8 in the UK, on those windy little country roads. That was a good ride! If it wasn't for all the kids driving them like idiots at home, I might go for it too.
I get a chuckle from those who manage to wipe out going down a straight road. Clearly no driving skills... but that's another conversation for another time.

Well, now, I have to come to the rescue here... my current D4 A8 4.0T is a beast of a sedan, and has been 100% reliable since day one. If you want a large car that will blow 99% of the cars off the road get an S8. And if that's not enough, have it tuned by APR. The last ride I had in an S8 was so intense I was getting woozy under hard braking....
Regarding the R8, and it's ilk, cars that go that fast and hug the road that well can only shine on a racetrack.

I'm surprised one would consider an R8 when owning an XKR. Simply from an aesthetics POV. Jag owners partly buy them because they look so damn good. And as a friend once told me, the R8 has been hit severely with the ugly-stick...
I'm a sucker for beauty. just ask my wife. I couldn't live with an R8. But to each his own of course
