Did this repair today. Thanks for the help.
When I removed the wood trim piece above the glove box, the metal clips stayed in the dash. Carefully removed the clips and installed on trim piece. No amount of pushing would get the trim piece to stay in the dash. Carefully removed clips from trim piece and reinstalled in dash. Simple push and the piece is back in.

Before I did the repair I watched a video that recommended removing the trim. I do believe that a small portion of the top of the box is covered by the trim piece. If I remember, I tried to remove the box without removing the trim. It was easier for me with the trim removed. YMMV

Many of us were. It would be a good story I think to find out why this very simple task was not completed on so many units during the build process. What befell the Glove Compartment Damper Technician (Senior Grade)? A mystery worthy of Agatha Christie...
