Default Heater Hose Leak

My rear heater hose is leaking and the shop is recommending replacing all the heater hoses for $1000. Is that steep? They will replace just the rear heater hose for $450.

Its a big job. And as its an '10... other hoses will start to let go as well.

I just paid about $2500 of a $6k bill to replace all the coolant hoses accessible, plus the water pump and belts. If you touch one hose, the other's will feel pain and start to fail.

That’s incredibly inexpensive considering the amount of labour involved to tear down everything and reassemble….I’d ask for a line item quote to verify exactly what you’re getting for $1K.

EDIT: The labour just to replace the rear pipe’s nearly $2K. What CeeJay paid’s fairly accurate and even a bit lower priced than typical.

How many hoses are there? I feel like I have to be specific with this shop. Water pump, rear crossover, and belts have all been replaced within the past 30k.

If the rear heater crossover’s been replaced then has it failed again or is the the throttle body heater hose which runs back to front under the supercharger? There’s ALL the other hoses and pipes all over, which are prone to failure, especially the front crossover, thermostat hoses, radiator hoses and splitter pipes, supercharger pipes, etc. I’ve done this more than once on this engine.

As Guy says, it is a big job... and more importantly, there are so many fragile pieces involved that once you get to that back crossover, most will be disturbed or will have to be removed anyway. It's pointless to try and replace just that crossover.... bottom line for our cars is to replace as many plastic pieces as feasible once you removed the intake and get into the car. It's an "All OR NOTHING" job! Figure a few grand to do everything. It's mostly labor...6 hours+ depending who you talk to. Good luck.

And to be fair... its a 2010. You got 12 years out of it. And I don't know how many miles you have nor how well she's been maintained. As my esteemed colleagues have said, "you let one thing go..."
I like the "All or nothing" approach.

Rear heater hose is very easy (30 minutes?) , provided you can access it, (supercharger removed)

Surely it's all quick and easy, once the blower's removed, that's the long hard part. Plus the SC gaskets aren't reusable and must be replaced for each inter-cooler.

One of the hoses is for the expansion tank, about $30 and easy to replace. The other is for the supercharger water pump, also relatively easy to replace. Both are for the 2007-2009 XKR, I think.

So its not the heater hose? Forgive my ignorance. Also, not sure why the parts are for the 4.2.

One pipe under the supercharger, for labor alone, is like $1800.

2010/11 XK "heater hose" is rather high quality. It is the plastic, quick connect fittings that have failed here.
Also, the plastic vent pipe, atop the engine (at the quick connect).
And, the plastic reducer/wye adjacent to the water pump.
No actual hose failure, just plastic pipe/fittings.

That said, the 5.0L has little tolerance for insufficient coolant and the cars are 8 to 15 years old.
A reasonable "service life extension plan" should include the replacement of all plastic fittings in the coolant system.
The quick connect fittings are available (internet) for those so inclined.

Good luck.

The expansion tank hose is listed for the 4.2 but appears may suit the 5.0 as well since all X150 utilise the same expansion tank. The other hose can be had fro $20-30 and is listed for the 4.2 in some places and a heater return hose for the 5.0, also very easy to replace in minutes. So save yourself $400 and replace them yourself.

Perhaps a lesson learned? If a shop states something needs attending to…. actually go out to the car on the hoist and ask them to show you precisely the issue??

We might have saved ourselves 12 replies as a heater hose is not an expansion tank hose.

Hmm ... Nashville.
That's Harper Jaguar territory.
Are you talking to them?
How is their reputation?
