Default Help me pick which one to sell BMW vs Jag

No bias in here please

The Jag 07 has 92K miles The BMW has 178K Strike 1 for the BMW which BTW is a 328i E93 Vert 09

The Jag I bought mainly because I couldnt find a decent E93 under $15K I love the clam shell top, Strike 1 for the JAG

Purchase price is not a consideration. Long term reliability, maintainability and availability of parts is Im gonna say Strike 2 for the Jag. But its a 10 strike game.

Curb appeal, Jag Wins hands down Strike 2 BMW

Cabin room, I know I know , but its still a concern Jag Strike 3

Tranny Both are 6 speed auto , the BMW is a GM , the Jag is a ....Im not saying , Tie

Engine , hands down , that V8 is sweet, the I6 is a commuter but not a dog even with 177k on the clock , PO took good care of it. BMW strike 3

Bells and Whistles, the Jag has a lot , but be honest , the antiquated comp and control system is a PIA. The BMW on the other hand is , IDrive, is loaded, is easy to adapt to you and has massive support in the field, Sorry Jag Strike 4

Fun to drive factor, or what was it FarFignuggen Jag because its closer to a sports car , IF that is what you want. BMW strike 4

Ill stop here cause as you can see there are + / - for both. Fill in some strikes for me. I probably could just keep both but Im insurance poor with 6 vehicles.

Wanna buy a 71 Camaro ? PM me

Are you sure about this??? The 'maintainability' may be correct, but also more $$$ for the BMW. Reliability is two strikes for the Bimmer though, right?

Between the direct injection and BMWs garbage VANOS, PCV, EGR, plastic cooling system, I’d argue against the BMW. I know because I just unloaded one from that era. I’ve worked on plenty and while parts are plenty available, the fact that ECS Tuning sells cooling system refresh kits to replace the whole damn thing is because there’s a need for it…

I think Cee Jay meant BMW and not MB and oh man that Camaro. I have no direct comparison as I've never owned a BMW. I can say I have done all my own work with the exception of getting a bumper cover repaired, my maintenance costs over 6 years totaled $6465, roughly $1008 per year. This is just one repair and the rest is maintenance. I'm not adding in the upgrades of done. I Don't drive it in the winter though so consider that fwiw.

Disregarding mileage, I think the Beemer is an easier sale. I see lots of XKs languishing in the classifieds. With mileage considered, the Beemer might be the harder sale, especially down the road. Either way your selling to a narrow enthusiast market.

The real decision comes down to which one gives you more pleasure? My other car is a Mercedes CLS550, which I could go through and do similar strikes against my Jag for the computer system, cabin space, and maintenance (much easier to find a BMW/Mercedes indy, since those cars are much more common). But at the end of the day driving the Jag makes me happy, while the CLS550 is just another grey sedan. For people like us, cars are emotional, not logical, and no matter how many categories and strikes allowed, you're still going to regret making the logical decision if it doesn't match up with the emotional decision you want to make.

You bought a headlight lately , or a wheel, i dont necessairly agree on the reliability. the 177k on this 328 speaks to that. But ,yeah say 2 for the Bimmer

the thing that got to me is the coding support in the BMW community.

I still cannot get the Airbag light turned off on the Jag

When I bought the bimmer , the headlight was damaged, I love a challenge. Fixed all the mechanical / electrical issues and the darn thing would not come on when plugged in LH side, Swap it over to RH side ALL ok.

I had been seeing a new coding tool from ProTool , so I gave it a try. Worked like a champ

Changed about a dozen other things, like raising the idle 100 rpm, enabling a digital MPH read out in the cluster, yada yada, $150 and I get a new toy , Oh and Turned on Video in Motion. Riding around town today watching Saving PVT Ryan

So yeah , Im disappointed in the Jag support.
I talked with Steve at JagWrangler about an upgrade and to do it , the AUX had to be enabled.
His comments about it were addressed around my feed back that the local dealer wants $200+ to do that , then add in the upgrade price. Its cost prohibitive,
He said grab SDD , I said learning curve, Cable, Nada.
Maybe I keep both, BMW daily, Jag at the drags Fri and Sat.

Wanna buy a Camaro

Pull both front seat belts out ALL the way, let them fully retract and repeat this several times. Your airbag light is in conjunction with this. Just the cheapest, easiest "maybe" fixes for that problem.

I'm sure ON wouldn't hurt. Evidently there's a switch or something integrated that gets dirty or misaligned or something. ABS didn't happen on my Jag, but this procedure fixed my Continental way many years ago.

You've answered your own question with the title to this thread. I know too much about BMWs, despite their massive aftermarket support for BMW vs the nearly non-nonexistent support for Jag, to EVER want one, unless it was brand new and I wasn't required to keep it for more than 12 months. Jag and BMW both face the future lack of parts though and at some point will likely no longer be serviceable without custom making parts. Of course all combustion cars will be done for eventually.

SDD is meh in terms of interface but extremely powerful; and if you're savvy, VERY cheap. If you think SDD is bad, go work on SD3/SD5. I hate Maserati/Ferrari tech and the Jaguar has been way easier lol. I've used VCDS, DIS, Star, SD3, SDD and a Tech 2. I've got other OBD1 GM, Ford, Chrysler readers; genericized stuff too.

These cars are substantially less common than a BMW. There's less guides how to do things, the parts weren't necessarily common between several MILLION vehicles like the straight six BMWs can be, and really they're much different cars. The X150 is a mid level luxury grand tourer by a low volume mfr and the E93 was an entry level luxury compact executive car by a high volume mfr. They made a minimum of 90k units PER year of the 3 series just for export to US production during the E93 gen, and they made 54k units of all variants of X150 XK put together over all years for all markets. They made more E92 M3s than they made all XKs put together over less than half as many years.

I have owned 3 BMWs, an e38 740i, an e38 750iL and an e83 X3 3.0i. I will probably buy one again in the future(E31 840/850), but even the V12 7-Series never felt as special as my X100 XKR Convertible. THe 2000s and later BMW went to a level of plastic in the engine bay that when I work on friends cars, I am 100% not impressed. The Jaguar has some but it seems a lot less. I don't care for brilliant design choices like running the front axles through the oil pan (no you did not read that wrong) on the X3; its an SUV and you basically made an oil pan gasket job cost $1500-2000 so that it had a lower center of gravity wrt the mass of the engine.

Mud,
We face the same dilemma...
Me? I punted, and am almost finished building a 30' x 70' shop/garage. This, so I can keep my precious (but hi mile) '07 XJR, '02 M3 Vert (E46's rule), '85 VW SVX Westfalia (Fish Car), '02 Toy Tundra (gotta' have a V8 truck), plus four motorcycles, one Kubota, one Gravely, etc. You get the picture...
You? Keep the Jag and (especially) that thumpin' Camaro...

I bought a new 2003 BMW Z4 when I turned 60. Had the 2.5 engine w/ standard trans..
Drove it in the summer only for 17 years putting on a little over 77K
The only thing I had to do during that time was new tires, fuel pump and general maintenance.
Rock solid trouble free car.
Sold it back in 2020 and found my current summer ride, 2010 XK vert w/ 50K miles and. have put about 6k miles on it. So far trouble free except for replacing the TMP's. The summer I bought the Jag I had the dealer replace all fluids plus a transmission pad drop and new battery.
Can only hope to have the same luck with the Jag as I had with the Z4.
