Default help with overheating

Hi folks, once again the jag gremlins strike again. I have a 2009 XK with approx 50k miles. never abused, as its my wifes daily driver. the car oveheated, I added coolant as I thought that was the culprit. It did it again, I scanned it and got a P0483 fan performance code. I need help. thank you.

First suspect has got to be the thermostat especially if it’s the original. After a time they fall apart.
Also worth getting an app that monitors various options on the car including water temp so you can get some notice of
temperatures before it over heats.

You will need an OBD2 module and to download an app such as Torque Pro to your phone and they Bluetooth to each other.
only a few dollars but worth every penny You can get both from Amazon
I know it’s cooler in the UK but my fan very rarely comes on if at all

OK first things first. You added coolant. Where's the leak?
Check for and fix leaks
Test or replace the expansion tank cap
Check the thermostat

Regarding the code - you don't have the last two digits but here are the possibilities

P048309 -
Cooling fan obstructed
Fan/motor damaged
P048316 -
Fan control module reports battery voltage less than nine volts.
  • CHECK the battery condition
  • CHECK the charging system and fan circuits
P048317 -
Fan control module reports battery voltage greater than 18 volts
  • CHECK the battery condition
  • CHECK the charging system and fan circuits

P048397 -

Cooling fan jammed
  • CLEAR any obstruction and
  • INSTALL a new fan as necessary. Cooling Fan Motor and Shroud -

Get a coolant pressure tester. It's just a cap with a hand pump and a gauge. Pump it up to 14psi and look around. If the pressure doesn't drop in an hour or so, you may have a different problem.

Thing with topping up the coolant ,was it low causing it to overheat or did it loose coolant because it overheated.

Does the fan run at all?
That code points directly to a fan failure but see if you can tell if the fan runs and at what speed. It should run on low anytime the AC is on.
Since it's a 2009 you have the 4.2L engine?

Something about the module in the fan assembly...... Sucks too, because the entire thing must be replaced and not just the module.

I’m hoping it is a fan relay or temp sensor

Yes post back if the fan comes on at all.
You do have the 4.2L engine right?

As posted above the fan maybe OK and the controller has a problem. But they are not serviced separately. Now depending on your skill level you might find a cheap used unit and swap just the controller?

Yes he has the 4.2, Fan should spin freely. Is that happening? is it obstructed? The module @clubairth1 is referring to is located on the shroud I think. Coolant temp sensor may also be at fault. This sensor sends the signal the the ECM which in turn sends power to the control module, then the fans. Ideally you want real time data to read the voltage @ the module. If the voltage is @ 9 volts, and all connections between the battery and the module are clean, replace the module. You may gat lucky and find a cheap one on eBay.

I know you mentioned thermostat but least likely the problem imo and your codes confirm that. Easily checked without disassembly. Point an infrared thermometer to the hoses on either side of it, once the stat reaches operating temp, the hose temps will be the same on output and input.
