The history of the Jaguar name.
Well i know the beginning of the jaguar story of sidecars and William Lyons. But it is the name {JAGUAR} that i would like to know about. As i am aware it was chosen by a British ad company in 1935 from a series of animals names, but that's all i can find. Any more info on the subject would be interesting.

If any member was to pick a name to suit this brand if starting from scratch , what would you pick.
I love saying "i own a Jag" it sounds great.

Only one animal is "King of the Jungle" - the Lyons (that would be Sir William).
"Lion" would have been perfect, but either another car already had that name or Sir William was not an egotist.
Note that the "Lyonheart" is a current supercar based on the E-Type. There's a thread about it on this Forum.

Its a very interesting question, if the marque would have had the same success with a different. I agree the change from SS to jaguar as the brand name is well documented but I've never heard the story of why Jaguar was chosen as a model name prior to becoming the brand. I agree Lion or Lyons just doesn't doesn't sound the same but Puma may be?

Lyons began looking through lists of birds and animals before deciding on the fastest creature with a name that could be applied to a car. He wanted the name Jaguar, but permission had to be granted by Bristol-Siddeley (they had already registered the names Lion, Leopard and Jaguar for use on their aero engines ) .The name was introduced for new models in September 1935, and until 1940 they were known as SS Jaguars. However the nomenclature was reversed for the 2 seater sports car that would become such an icon in years to come . This was known as the Jaguar SS100. SS gradually gave way to SS Jaguar and the SS motif on the chrome radiator was gradually modified to enhance the Jaguar branding.
