Default Horn Replacement

I am swapping out the horns for Hella Twin Supertone High/Low Disc Horn. They are 119 db! When I honk the horn, which is not often- I mean it!

Do I have to pull the bumper to install it or will the radiator cover be enough? Anything else I should know before giving it a go?

119 dB!!!

You'll need to wear ear defenders inside the car when you use them.

Don't forget to install the proper relay and properly ground if you want to reach the full 119db.

Sound clip! I'd like to hear the overall tone. The standard one is really quite boring too... exotics need exotic noises. Or some such thing.

I will. I am waiting for them to arrive. I am installing the OEM black mesh upper grille at the same time. Got the grille yesterday, it's substantial than I was expecting!

One of my OEM horns died yesterday, so I searched and found your old thread. I know that you no longer have your XK, but did you ever install the Hella horns? If so, did you have to remove the bumper cover and did you like how they sound? Any chance you have a sound clip?

I think I need to do this also. I almost got hit two separate times today by people who didn't bother looking before a lane change. The second time I had to swerve into the bike lane to avoid, good thing there weren't any cyclists.... or not?

Someone posted one of those in here a few years ago. Sorta sounded gay.
PREEMPTIVE: No, not 'gay' as in sexual orientation. 'gay' as in cheesy and unworthy.

The last time I was in Salt Lake City, the bike lanes were bigger than the car lanes...

I replaced my horn a couple of months ago. The factory horns were no longer working. The ones I bought at O'Reilly are absolute junk I'm ashamed to honk the horn. It sounds like a horn from a Yugo. I's love to get some of those big trumpet horns with the little air compressor, and mount them sideways, but I don't think they'll fit. I would even be willing to sacrifice some trunk space to a compressor and air tank, but there's just no place to mount the trumpets.

I think all States have legal limit as to how loud you can go. Some might not specify decibels, but use general language as a horn too loud can cause accidents. So just asking if you know your State's limit, or care?

From "Are Train horns illegal in my State?"
"The maximum legal decibel level for a car horn on a passenger vehicle is 100-110. ... All states have a line in their vehicle laws and regulations that states a car horn can not emit an unreasonably loud or harsh sound. Not all of them have that exact wording, but they all make the same point."

Edit: I guess in Massachusetts, the law reads - "No person operating a motor vehicle shall sound a bell, horn or other device, nor in any manner operate such motor vehicle so as to make a harsh, objectionable or unreasonable noise...."

Good luck with it.

Good grief! Someone might be offended. I can't remember using my horn in the last several decades. The last time was when a mechanic couldn't find it during an inspection (it was on the turn signal stalk of a TR8). I figure the only purpose of a horn is to aggravate someone.

The Hella Twin Supertone High/Low Disc Horn are not that good. I would not do it again. Fiamm trumpets are much better.

My horn stopped working. Dealer hasn't come back to me with a quote yet, but said it would involve pulling the bumper. Anyone been through this and willing to share what it cost?

For anyone else who is DIY-minded, here's a picture from a user named 8bit on a different forum which clearly shows the dual horns in the center of the radiator.

Add two hours of shop time for bumper removal, horn install and bumper re-install.
