How many miles do you get out of a set of tires?

At about a year and a half I feel grip fall off from new enough that I want new tires no matter what the tread depth may be. I generally change around two years.
While unlikely, the difference could be life saving; why be cheap if we don't have to?
How I choose, I read reviews, and narrow down to a few excellent choices.(And really, lots of tire makers make great tires!)
Then I look at mounted pictures on cars at roughly the size I would be buying, and choose what tread/sidewall shape seems to catch my fancy.

I also swapped from Dunlop to the Michelin PS 4S all round.
The difference is night and day, the Michelin’s have immense grip in the dry and the wet.
In fact I was caught over the early part of winter away from home in heavy snow. I drive home on snow covered roads and again the tyres were really good. Much reduced speeds but the tyres once again dealt with the conditions very well.
Wear seems to be fine so far and tyre noise is reduced, which is a benefit on a convertible.

Based on my driving I selected to go with Continental DWS on the rears and DWS-06 on the fronts. the tire spec. for thread depth is 10/32" or .312 for both tires and sizes. I have a little over 12,000 miles on the rear and they measure .260" and about 7,000 miles on the front which measure .310". The ride is comfortable , smooth and quiet. No change in feel of the handling is felt in the 2 to 3 years that I had them installed. I had 4 wheel alignment done at time if installation and there appears to be no abnormal wear on the edges. I am running stock air pressures as recommended on the door sticker. I drive the car in 3 seasons of the year and park it in the snow months. Satisfied with these results.
