How many owners is too many?

Summing up. Was the car serviced regularly by a dealer? Do you have the dealers names so you can talk to the service people? Don't be shy about making the call, this isn't a Toyota you want to buy. If it checks out, then get an inspection. Ignore the piddling contest between members about leases.

I just bought mine. I ran a camera down the oil filler. Everything gun metal gray- looks perfect. Crawl underneath. No rust. Carfax maintenance history:all from dealers- all there on schedule. Local dealer pulled sheet for me. All recalls up to date. Drives straight as an arrow. Shine flashlight down the body panels in dim room. No waves, flatspots, fish eyes, or different texture on parts of paint. Turn on and off every accessory- they all worked (although my outside temperature gauge drops to zero and goes back to reading sometimes). One wheel gouged up, one back up sensor pushed in a bit, some scratches. OBD hooked up. No stored codes. Mine does an emission check. The car passed.
What I care about is "Did I do the best I could to know what I bought?" Yes. The best situation is to buy from the original owner and see if they have records and see if they are believable. If you cant find that situation (or afford that situation) guessing is the best anyone is going to do about whether an owner "cared" about the long term health of your future car. I don't worry about how many owners.

The number of owners that it takes to be too many is the one where the owner didn't properly care for the vehicle.

here's the formula to use when deciding how man owners is too many:
(# of prev owners) x age of car / 1/2miles driven x market price ~ desired option + price offered > geographic region it is driven - 4Xaccident history/maintenance cosign the tangent of affordability - 3
OR
As Box said - any amount up to one that mistreats the car. Quality of owners is important not the quantity. These cars tend to not be driven much as they are most often not DD's and also tend to be leased more than other cars so there is a finite ownership time span. As you will start seeing they will start popping up for sale right now more and more so as the weather gets better and cars change hands
