Default Installed Battery Now Top doesn't Work

I installed a new battery in my 2007 XK and now the top doesn't work. after installing the battery I pushed and held the button to retract the top and it unlatched, retracted about a foot and stopped. I read the owners manual and went step by step on how to retract the top manually but couldn't get the Lid to open so that I could push the top down into the fully down position. Am I missing a step. All help is appreciated.

You need to reset your windows. Turn on the ignition, then run both windows down and keep holding the buttons for 5 seconds. Then run both windows up and keep holding the button for 5 seconds. Then try the top again. Repeat if it does not work the first time.

Thanks. Your information was very helpful but didn't solve the problem.

In addition to post #2, you need to make 100% sure that the trunk convertible shade is 100% in place within the rails and the sensor is making contact so that when the top starts to go down, the car knows that the shade is in place.

If the shade is not in place correctly, the top will not work properly. Others have reported the same problem as you. Once they re-aligned the pull-out shade between the top and the truck area, the top opened correctly.

If none of the above suggestions work, try holding the top button for a minute or two. If it still does not work, you will need to manually lower the top to reset it (see instructions in the owner's manual).

The OP said he was trying the manual procedure, but couldn't get the 'lid' (I think he means the tonneau cover) to open. I've never had to open the cover manually (yet), any pointers on how to do that?

My apology for not reading carefully.

Next to the pump there is steel cable with a wire loop about two inches long covered with black tubing. You need to pull this cable to unlatch the tonneau. If you do not see it search around the pump area with a a flashlight for the wire loop.

Another tip: The manual fails to explain that the top can be impossible to move manually until the system depressurizes...which could take up to 15-20 minutes after the pump has last run.

So recently I've been getting a dash message upon starting my car (07 XJ8) that says "Cruise not available" only ever on first start up. Subsequent starts will not produce the message. Found someone else who had this issue and it was due to the battery. Same here, reads just Barely over 12.0VDC sigh.. gotta love canadian winter for killing batteries!

My question to you gents is: is my alternator also dying? Voltage at the battery terminals with the cat running parked, front and rear screen heaters on as well as heated driver seat & steering wheel it shows me 13.8VDC which if I'm not mistaken is on the dangerously low end?

$0.02 anyone?

EDIT: Wrong thread, unintended necro. Attempt to reply also went nicely awry as it posted where I was originally intending to post this. Sigh.. not my day today!

This is the XK/XKR forum, not the XJ/XJR forum, but your question is pretty generic. 13.8 is an acceptable charging voltage, but if your battery never charges to above 12 volts after sitting overnight after a good run it may need to be replaced. Normal is 12.8 volts for a fully charged battery in good condition.

If your car has not been driven much lately, the battery may just need to be charged.
