Default Jaguar XK-R 5.0SC - Front right height sensor

Greetings all

Finally managed to take my car out today after the lockdown here in Spain. As I am reversing out of the garage I get a warning on the dash saying dynamic stability control error or something similar. Pulled back in, hooked up scanner and I have a code C1A04-14 - Permanent - Front right height sensor. Interrogated this module on live data and could see zero voltage showing up from front right height sensor so I am guessing this has failed.

Is this is a DIY job to change or better done by specialist?

I also had this code as well that kept coming back after reset - U3000-55 - intermittent - control module

The net result is that the car drives fine but I cannot put in sport dynamic mode.

Many thanks in advance
Sam

Battery has been plugged into a CTEK or similar the whole time it's been unused?

If not get it on charge, if it was then try a hard reset before you attempt expensive module changes, some can be a little tempremental if not getting absolute full power.

Hi there - thanks for the reply. Its been on trickle charger the whole time but also occasionally started but with no fault showing. The fault only showed as it was actually moved - i'd say within 3m of backing it up.

Hard reset presumably disconnecting battery? For how long and do I need to do anything reconfiguration wise after I reconnect it?

Anyone? I have found the level sensor for sale new genuine Jag part around £100. Do I just fit that and it self calibrates?

Sam, disconnect both battery terminals and touch the leads together for a few seconds, then leave them disconnected from the battery for around 20 mins and reconnect

You've not elaborated on the brand/make of trickle charger, also if you had the charger connected directly to the battery terminals, if so it's a no-no on the 5.0 cars which have apparently some sensitive electronics.

Something like a CTEK won't hurt it (I had mine connected directly for a year before I learnt the error of my ways) but some less intelligent chargers/maintainers definitely could do harm to your electrics.

Both he reset and the danger of incorrectly charging are well discussed on this and other forums.

Hi it was a trickle charger on it (Black & Decker) not a full battery charger.

So when I disconnect the battery as suggested is there anything I need to do before or after in terms of systems resets etc. or it just defaults to normal?

The fact that the sensor is showing zero volts though on my tablet scanner would seem to suggest a failed sensor? Well anyway I'll try this reset procedure first

Many thanks again
Sam.

I did the reset you suggested today but it made no difference. When I read the codes again loads of modules had comms errors (from the battery being unplugged) but I just cleared those and left over was height level sensor, a gearbox code that referred to stability control data (ie. the same thing) and HVAC a/c pressure low that I am aware of anyway.

I checked again the live data from the stability control module and right front sensor has zero voltage - other 3 had about 2.5v.

So this seems pretty cut and dried to me - its a failed height level sensor. As a result I cannot access dynamic mode and I get the error message for this on the dash. So I am going to change the sensor with a genuine new part.

So my question circles back again - has anyone changed one before, is it difficult to access? Does it need any coding or calibration? Looks like 3 bolts and an electrical connector from the picture of the new one

Thanks
Sam.

Ps. note the trickle charger is connected to the remote terminal behind the vent on the side of the boot/trunk not direct to battery. I did originally put it on the battery without any adverse affect but changed it shortly afterwards due to the advice I received. Matter of fact its actually easier to connect it there than to the battery because the pigtail plug-in is so short on my charger that when it was on the battery it was hidden behind the panel and inaccessible meaning it wasn't possible to unplug the charger from the pig-tail

Well, part ordered. I'll let you guys know how to fit it when it gets here!! Seems X150 XK-R is not a hands-on car yet compared to technical replies on the X300 forum!!

Finally got the part - £155 from British Parts.

As a reminder of the original problem, had a dash warning say "Dynamic Stability Control error" or to that effect. Autel tablet showed C1A04-14-front right height sensor. My question was whether it was a DIY job to fit. I was asked about battery chargers etc. and doing a reset - none of that worked. Given the sensor showed zero volts on the live data from the control module it seemed pretty cut and dried to me that it was a sensor so I ordered it. My fear was that it would be buried somewhere behind wheel arch liners and would need specialist to fit and possibly calibrate. No replies on this.

SO, for the benefit of others I will answer my own questions!!

1) If the sensor shows zero vaults and the fault code says it the sensor - its the sensor. No amount of jiggery pokery with battery resets is going to bring it back to life
2) It is a DIY job. If you have long arms you can even do it without taking the wheel off!!! I did just the car up just enough to get the wheel off and that gave me a chance to see how it was fitted. Two 10mm bolts hold the bracket. New one comes with a shiny new bracket attached (but not new bolts ...) which was nice as the old one was dirty and the torx screws holding the sensor to it corroded given its location exposed in the wheel arch. I undid the bolts and pulled the arm off the suspension then fitted the new one with connector still on old one. This meant I only disconnected the battery for about 30 seconds switching the plug over.
3) No it doesn't need any programming or calibrating - started the car, error gone and now I can use dynamic mode again with the big gear change numbers and no annoying fault glaring back at me from dashboard

Hope useful for someone at some stage!!!!

Meanwhile had a remap to 560bhp and more torque - this is one crazy car and now I can fully enjoy it with this niggle behind me!!!
