Keeping the battery charger on

Keeping the battery charger on
Hi, I have a 2006 XK. I often have to be away from home from 3 weeks or more, and invariably come back to a flat battery. I have a CTEK 5.0 battery charger. My question is, can I safely leave it connected to the battery while the battery is still powering the car's electronics? Thanks.

Welcome to the forum bill.monks,
My Jaguar usually sits in the garage for up to three months during the summer on a CTEK. I have it connected so I can shut the doors, lock the vehicle and set the alarm. In this way the vehicle goes into "sleep" mode and the CTEK charges as required.

Bill, as Graham says absolutely fine, far easier if you have a garage as the power lead for the CTEK will allow the boot to be closed. However if just on a driveway with an extension lead a little trickier as the extension lead cable is invariably thicker and may cause problems when it comes to closing.

I've used a CTEK on my driveway with a "standard" 10 amp 3-core extension cable and had no problems shutting the boot/trunk lid. You have to give it a bit of a slam, but it's caused no discernable damage to the seals, which are plenty big enough to cope.

When you press the lock button the second time, the only thing that happens is the sounder beeps at you to tell you that you've already locked the car. See Post # 64 in this old thread: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...s-73471/page4/

In the UK (and probably some other markets such as EU), "double" locking enables internal ultrasonic sensors (if fitted) and deadlocks the car.
Deadlock means the internal levers to unlock the car are disabled (and so are any other similar-function switches/buttons).
This means a thief who smashes a window still cannot open a door, for example.
It's usually a bad idea to double lock a car with any human or animal occupant as they are liable to set off the alarm - and a human will find it awkward to exit the car (an animal also!).
On double locking the car may well enter a lower power (sleep) mode much sooner, too.
