Key FOB advice.

Key FOB advice.
Lost my 2nd key fob for my 2007 XK. Now I have only one key. I went to the Jaguar dealer from whom I purchased the car 15years ago. I also purchased two two previous Jags from this dealership. They said they can’t help me. The car is too old. They said they don’t have the software for programming a 2007 XK. If I want, they may be able to update and change out the security hardware and install a new security system. Boy ! That sounds expensive. Any advice?

From what I've read on the forum a Jag dealer is the only outfit able to program the keys - although this site selling fobs says not to take them to a dealer which suggests a locksmith may be able to program the fob - I've had fobs cloned for my Ford Explorer Sport Trac at a local locksmith

From the site page:
- This remote must be professionally programmed when received by a local automotive locksmith (click here for Locksmith Search ). We do not recommend going to a dealer, as they may decline programming an aftermarket remote for you. Key blade also needs to be cut

I could believe it if they had given the reason that Smartkeys are unavailable (there are many reports of new Jaguars being supplied with only one Smartkey and a promise a second to be supplied when available) but not that they don't have the software. The XK dignostics software used to setup Smartkeys is SDD (Symptom Driven Diagnostics). From 2017 this was superseded by Pathfinder which is not backwards compatible with earlier models. However, Jaguar Dealers have access to both diagnostics applications within their subscription package..
The real reason is more likely to be a combination of difficulty in obtaining a Smartkey from JLR and lack of technician experience with programming additional Smartkeys.
I'd be highly suspicious of the suggestion to install a new security system. Apart from being eye wateringly expensive, the possibility of all components being available from JLR and the dealership having the expertise to perform installation and setup is very remote.
Smartkeys used to mean dealer only but several members report buying aftermarket and having them successfully programmed. The thing to avoid is a 'used' Smartkey. If it hasn't been programatically unpaired from the original vehicle, it cannot be reprogrammed.
The key blades are made of something close to kryptonite! However, more locksmiths are acquiring the appropriate cutting machines for this type of high secure key material.

above is the company i used. when i originally called around (last summer) i found several locksmith companies that could program the FOB. one had trouble making the physical key. but the programming of two FOBs was quick and easy.
so i recommend you call around. i would be surprised if you cannot find a third party that can program it at a regular price.

Magoo,
This old thread should help you. Read it all, but in particular (1) post #16 by Forum Moderator Cambo about the two different types of Smartkeys - single channel and multi-channel, and functionality in the center console key slot, and (2) post #27 by Forum Member 007XKR, about having a single-channel fob programmed for his 2007 XKR.

Good luck!

I was down to one key fob on my 2013. I went today and got a duplicate factory looking key fob made, with a warranty, with the emergency key cut for $350 total at a local locksmith here in So Cal. Try and find a locksmith that deals with just car keys and key fobs. If you go to the locksmith that does residential and commercial they wont know much about these smartkeys.

Desperate
Can’t seem to find anyone to sell and program a couple of remotes for my 2007 XK. The only remote I have will now only start the car when placed in the console armrest. I am willing to drive 1000 miles from my home in New Orleans. Local Jaguar dealer is still no help, still says they don’t have software. I read the SSD software used by the dealers must have a functional key in order to create duplicates. I hate to think I need to retire by XK.

Magoo,
You're in New Orleans and there might be an automotive locksmith near you who is knowledgeable and has the Jaguar software to program a used Smartkey.
I recommend that you Google "Automotive Locksmith Near Me" and call them.
See post #6 for what's involved in reprogramming a Smartkey:

I've been anxious, also, about losing the one key I have for my '10 XK. I ordered an SDD program already loaded onto a (cheap) laptop - latest version, v163. The seller, this guy, ebay.com/itm/294220572125 claims that it can make duplicate keys - we shall see. I figure, if it works, I'll break even on the key / programming cost from the dealer, and have a usable SDD for doing other "dealer" stuff. Still awaiting its arrival from England (that's in the U/K); it's been bouncing around Long Island between UPS depots for a few days, expecting delivery on Monday. I'll post on whether I have success, or manage to brick my car in the process.

I have already googled auto locksmiths near me. I have called local auto locksmiths in the area. They won’t touch Jaguars or Mercedes. Tracee - I hope the SDD software works. Let me know. I read you need a working fob in order to program additional fobs. I hope this is not true. Again my only fob works only in the armrest. I don’t need the physical keys cut. I have two of those. .

From what I understand, all Smartkeys must be present with the car for the keys to be paired with a module in the instrument cluster.

Brand new, never programmed! Does not have to be divorced from "parent". Lowest price I've ever seen!

I obtained and had programmed a second fob for my 2013 XK recently in central/south NJ. Of three local locksmiths contacted, two indicated that they had the capability. One of those wanted silly money, although still way better than the dealer. The one I went with obtained the fob, programmed it and cut the key for just over $200.
Just had to wait a couple of days for him to have the fob delivered to him and then did the job in less than a half hour while I waited.
The locksmith is not a Jag or automotive specialist, but certainly experienced.
You have to make some phone calls. Good luck.
