Default Key Remote/Fob Replacement

Forgive me if this has been asked before but I can't find it through a simple search.
Are there any dealers out there that would sell a remote fob to an out of state customer?
Local dealer here in Honolulu wants over $1k for a pair.
Thanks!

You can buy any Smart Key you want from anywhere, but you will still need a dealer to marry them. Will your dealer marry parts he doesn't sell to you? Some won't.
Also, if you buy a Smart Key elsewhere, make SURE they are unmarried and fully returnable if they don't work.

It would be helpful to know the model year of your X150. The procedure changed (maybe with the 5.0?) at some point. My experience is with a 2007.

Regardless, the problem is more likely to be with the programming of said FOB than the purchasing of same. Many people want to sell you the part if they are going to program it, which kind of sticks you to the dealer. The one I went to in Colorado charged me $245 per FOB, and the programming was another $185, roughly. Jaguar dealers are also reluctant to program FOBs that don't have a leaper logo on them, but I was led to understand that it is possible.

In the middle of 2007 production, they switched from single-channel to multi-channel FOBs, and you'll need to be aware of which you need. I understand that change occurred at VIN#B12815.

If you can talk your dealer into programming the FOB, they can be found on ebay or similar, but the key cannot already be paired with another vehicle, and as Stuart likes to mention: Make sure you get a money-back guarantee before you buy one!

I’m nearly sure the dealer here won’t program a key I bought elsewhere. They’ve got a monopoly here so pretty much can do whatever they want unfortunately.

I’m actually contemplated purchasing a 2011 xkr that has only one key fob.

the only other issue the car has the the dreaded leather dash dismemberment 😂

Hi Fuzzy,

I would Yelp mobile locksmiths/key fobs. I'm in Los Angeles, but I had a guy come out with a new FOB and programming for about $350. It works perfectly and it is an exact replica of the messed up original that came with the car. Honolulu is probably large enough to have that service.

The new fob's emergency key will be a blank. It will need to be laser cut, using the key from your old fob as a template.

I checked with two reputable locksmiths that program key fobs.
No joy for Jaguar.

If you are negotiating to buy a 2011 XK or XKR; why not make part of the deal two working key fobs included in the transaction?

I am going to take that into account when I make an offer.
But the asking price is fairly reasonable so I'm not going to be a hard *** on price. LOL!

Only one Smartkey is a disaster waiting to happen. As you can see from the previous replies, replacing a missing one is a pain that takes time and money to arrange. Replacing the ONLY Smartkey if it is lost or breaks is always very expensive as the "dead" vehicle has to be taken to a dealer and there is no leverage on cost in that situation.

A new Smartkey is expensive from Jaguar but the Dealer could absorb programming and key cutting costs. That would be a reasonable compromise.

Graham,
Thanks for the advice.
I'm not buying from a dealer.
Regardless how the negotiation goes, I'll be buying a set of new keys.

I have 2 Smartkeys but it was 14 deg F overnight in Durham
You have 1 Smartkey but it's 72 deg F in Honolulu

I'm almost tempted to offer a trade.

Graham

Sorry to hear that. The mobile gut that came over also cut a new laser key as well.

Perhaps make friends with the parts people at your local dealer and they may cut you a deal.

Call ALL of the locksmiths in 808. There is bound to be SOMEONE -- if not O'ahu, maybe Maui or Big Island.

Just an update, kept calling more locksmiths and finally found a guy. He even carries remotes that he knows will work,
$375 including the emergency key! Crazy!
AND, I don't need to buy two new remotes. The new remote will just be "added on".
Thanks again to everyone for the kind advice!!!
