Earlier in the week I had service done on the Jag -- replaced a leaking water pump and had the rear control arms replaced. Took her out on the road for the first time this morning and heard the rasp of metal on metal coming from the rear -- sounded rather like the chuff of a steam engine that increased and decreased with the speed. Pulled over and cycled the parking brake, but that didn't cure it. Went to my appointment, then went straight to the shop, thinking that the brake pads were riding on the rotor. Turns out it was the brake dust shield scraping -- they must have banged it when working on the control arm. Took them about ten minutes to set it right, no charge of course, and lots of apologies.

Got home ready to share my new found knowledge about suspicious sounds from the rear end, only to discover Barry had posted the solution for someone else month ago. Like CeeJay and Stuart keep saying: searching the forum really works!

Oh, and the new control arms really tightened up the soggy rear end -- lots less bounce and sway back there. Wish I could have such an easy fix for my own.

Amen, brother! I could not afford to own/operate my two MY's without all the world wide assistance, (historical thread postings and personal responses included), from the very helpful and knowledgeable members from this forum! I've fixed, replaced, repaired, and updated many components because of the DIY'ers that have shared how easy it is to do something myself, and avoided my local Dealer who wants nothing to do with repairing a Jaguar over 10 years old (except replace, replace, replace at hugely inflated prices).
