Tape the small tab part of the left-rear hook area on the slider part of the separator. There is a microswitch in that area. The tab part has a weak magnet that touches another weak magnet in the slot area at the back of the slider-guide.
I took some pictures but they suck.
You can feel the part on the slot hook and if you remove the whole slide unit you can easily see the magnet. It's about 3/8" x 3/4" or so.
A better idea is to see if you have another magnet laying around somewhere, maybe a cut refrigerator magnet taped into place will work.
If you can't understand my blabbering, I can try taking some more pictures.

Yes, I guess. The thin bar that goes across. The left end has a small shiny metal part on the rear when bent up, or the bottom when flat. That's the one magnet. It doesn't attract very much at all, neither does the one on the fixed slot on the left of the trunk wall that's hard to see. The two of the magnets touch when the separator is back and up. That's the switch for the top.

Lock your separator in place and look at the left side where it is in position. The tab on the carrier is only a piece of metal as the switch is a magnetic contact switch attached to the left side rail. If you want to leave the carrier out you just need to tape a piece of metal to the rail . Just make sure you don't put any packages in the open space and then put the top down.

Hey guys, I think I have a similar problem, but I don't have the little end piece that goes on the separator. Is there a way to replace it or an alternative to get it to work. Can you take some pictures, so where it is located, and I can attempt to use a few different magnets to remedy the situation. if it work, i'll post pictures and a DIY on it.

Also IIRC, its just a piece of metal on the left end of the separator, the magnet is in the switch within the bracket.
