I read somewhere that they changed the fueling so it dumps a little extra fuel in on the overrun so it burns in the exhaust and makes the pops, like an old-school carburetor fed engine. If you have a Bosch ECU XKR I suppose in theory it should be possible to somehow put the F-Type R tune in it...?

I think pops and bangs are usually mapped in using negative spark timing on the overrun/gear shift mapping as opposed to dumping extra fuel in. A lot of manufacturers do this now. Should be possible with any of the ECU's. A quick google throws up loads of hits from tuning forums etc.
A few tuners in the UK offer pop and bang maps for cars (usually hot hatches), so although I've not seen anything specifically for Jag's, it shouldn't be anything out of the ordinary. You'll need to find a tuner who writes their own maps though.

I always thought it was the result of unburnt fuel in the exhaust . This was typical in my 4 weber carb Ferrari on deceleration. Was a cool sound and even some times when you downshifted at high rpm's it would even shoot out some flames. The old 308's used to like running a little rich. As for the XKR I get some good popping paddling down into 3rd and 2nd and once again if you do it at high rpm the noise is louder. It would be interesting to see if there is a difference in the F-type and XKR where both have the performance exhaust.

IMO the XKR with the performance exhaust or XKR-S have in just right for the GT. I also think the F-type's epic after pops and bangs fits the sports car well. I wouldn't want the pops and bangs on a GT any more than what I have on my XKR. A GT is not suppose to be loud like a roadster. A GT should be more subtle otherwise it risk looking repugnant.

Short answer is yes, we have not done an XKR yet, it runs a different ECU than the F type, but i had the same request just this week, so we need to pull our fingers out and get on with it
really miss my XKR - wish i had never sold it :-(
