Default more overrun chatter (popping)

Since our engine is essentially the same as the F-type R, is there a way to get similar overrun chatter by changing the exhaust? Or is it an engine software thing? Forgive my ignorance.

I believe its a design element that some beautiful engineer thought of and added to the F-type. There is some overrun I can hear at times but NEVER....is it EVER... EVER like the F-type... and I got a XKR-S which when it first came out was a loud intoxicating beast of its own. The F-Type takes it to a whole other level!

I read somewhere that they changed the fueling so it dumps a little extra fuel in on the overrun so it burns in the exhaust and makes the pops, like an old-school carburetor fed engine. If you have a Bosch ECU XKR I suppose in theory it should be possible to somehow put the F-Type R tune in it...?

I think pops and bangs are usually mapped in using negative spark timing on the overrun/gear shift mapping as opposed to dumping extra fuel in. A lot of manufacturers do this now. Should be possible with any of the ECU's. A quick google throws up loads of hits from tuning forums etc.

A few tuners in the UK offer pop and bang maps for cars (usually hot hatches), so although I've not seen anything specifically for Jag's, it shouldn't be anything out of the ordinary. You'll need to find a tuner who writes their own maps though.

Damn, if somebody could come up with that tune, I would totally be on board! But not for more than $50.

I always thought it was the result of unburnt fuel in the exhaust . This was typical in my 4 weber carb Ferrari on deceleration. Was a cool sound and even some times when you downshifted at high rpm's it would even shoot out some flames. The old 308's used to like running a little rich. As for the XKR I get some good popping paddling down into 3rd and 2nd and once again if you do it at high rpm the noise is louder. It would be interesting to see if there is a difference in the F-type and XKR where both have the performance exhaust.

I get some on my 12 XK. It has been tuned and has the Mina exhaust system. The overrun and pops are there but nothing like the Type F's; they are very subtle.

IMO the XKR with the performance exhaust or XKR-S have in just right for the GT. I also think the F-type's epic after pops and bangs fits the sports car well. I wouldn't want the pops and bangs on a GT any more than what I have on my XKR. A GT is not suppose to be loud like a roadster. A GT should be more subtle otherwise it risk looking repugnant.

Get rid of the catalytic converters....mine has TONS of chatter going on. Trying to figure out how to get rid of it without putting the stock cats back on, I don't care for it in the least.

The best way for me to get the popping sound is:
get into lower gear without fully lifting your gas foot. That way the fuel line remains open and the popping starts in my XKR (2007) exhaust. If you lift your gas foot, the fuel line is shut off.
Enjoy

Yes this can be done on most cars, here is a short video of our F Type running a popping burble map

Short answer is yes, we have not done an XKR yet, it runs a different ECU than the F type, but i had the same request just this week, so we need to pull our fingers out and get on with it

really miss my XKR - wish i had never sold it :-(

As the topic has been revived, I think this video is pretty relevant. It's a detailed how to for the 5.0 SC using an aftermarket exhaust.

I do this on my OEM stuff with an X pipe, but don't need to do all the crazy prep work. "Use Sport, Dynamic and the Rev Limiter" craziness. Mine doesn't do exactly that, but does more of an F-Type snappiness.

With my Mina exhaust I get a very gentlemanly over run without go out of normal drive. If I want more I put it in S with the "track" setting.
