Need help with frustrating whining sound from AC
I hear a constant howling / whining sound from the AC strangely enough coming from the left behind the driver side. It's gone if I slightly open the window or door. Playing with the vents has no effect. I tried to tape it and you will hear it between turning up the ac high and low. Suggestions much appreciated!

I've had a similar high pitch whining noise. Only there when a/c is on. Not a blower type sound and doesnt change with fan speed. Then I noticed that the a/c didn't seem to be cooling as well as it used to. I started to suspect that low freon was causing a vibration whine through a valve or evaporator in the dash (or something like that). Over the past few days the a/c no longer blows cold and the whine is gone. Appears to be related to freon pressure. I'll be taking it to dealer first thing next week.

mine seems like the air is flowing over something that causes the whistle. I don't understand why it seems to come from the back left as there's no vent there. Tried stuffing some clothes between the left driver chair and door but that doesn't change the sound. Maybe it's not coming from behind but only appears that way through weird acoustics??

I had a chirping sound in my '07 convertible and I thought at first it might be a demonic parakeet, but there were no droppings visible. The sound really bothered me and my first thought was to use a shotgun, but decided instead to investigate and try some other approaches first.
The sound was originating in the Bosch blower that's part of the AC unit behind the glove box on the passenger side. Since I'm in the US, it's on the right side of the car. There's a fan inside and it wasn't seated properly in it's housing and the noise came from the edge of the fan blades scraping the side of it's housing. The sound was intermittent, sometimes the chirping was loud and sometimes a bit quieter, but never silent. My car had never been in an accident, so the deformation wasn't caused by an impact, it just didn't sit right.
After really being bothered by the chirping sound to the point of complete distraction, I resolved to replace the blower, but it was going to be expensive (it really bugged me). My guess on the part and replacement cost was in the neighborhood of $1,500, but decided it was worth it to silence that parakeet. I could picture it's red eyes staring at me with x-ray vision through the dashboard. After a suggestion from someone on this forum, I thought I'd try an "adjustment" first.
While the car was running along with the AC, I sat on the ground, leaned over onto the passenger floor and looked up at the blower and it was happily chirping to my utter dismay. There's rubber spot on the bottom between two screws and I put my finger on it and could feel the fan rotating. Adding a little pressure with my finger on the rubber coating like a practiced proctologist, the chirping stopped. That confirmed that it was a problem with the seating of the fan.
I grabbed a torx wrench and gave the left screw a little tug, just a 1/4 turn looser, and the chirping stopped. I put my finger on the rubber cover again and could feel the fan turning....silently and would have jumped for joy, but I was still corkscrewed onto the floor of my passenger seat. I did, however, manage to kick my passenger door with joy. No damage though.
Now I have a happy cat. In the back of my mind though, lurks the thought that my mechanical machinations didn't really do the trick, that it was really that my cat was so happy with my playful petting that it simply swallowed that tiresome bird.

Mine does the same thing. It annoyed me at first but I got over it. I read on a thread that it was causing by the piping from the a/c going into the car. That there is a rather sharp bend and what you are hearing is the refridgerant passing that bend. I think there was a bullentin to replace that section of piping to stop the noise but don't quote me on it.

My wife started the car today to go to work and i heard this whining sound from outside, no noise inside. You would think it 's coming from behind the right front wheel, kind of in behind the air filter area. Sounds like more of a cross between sucking air and whining or something like that. Dosn't change on acceleration, but did stop after a minute or so.

I know this is an old post, but this is exactly the same sound I have. My specialist replaced the A/C compressor because it was making a rock tumbler noise. The replacement makes the same sound, although he said the previous was louder. He got a second replacement as well and it sounds the same as the other new one. He has no other ideas on what the fix is. After two new compressors, it is making the same sound and it goes away when the A/C is turned off.
Did you get a fix for yours? BTW, I see you're in Arlington, I'm in Fairfax. Do you have a preferred Jaguar specialist?

Thanks,
Justin

unfortunately this sounds very different then what I had. It was more of a whistling sound
