Hi,
I have just bought a 2007 XK 3.8 convertible with 2000miles on the clock. I would welcome any comments on the pro and cons and any problems I can expect to encounter. The car looks and drives like new and has a full service Jaguar service history. Having a phobia about rust, where can I expect to find it. Are the sub frames steel?

The whole car is aluminum. With such low miles, I'd give it a couple of months of routine driving to see what issues may come up.

 

3.8? Is that a diesel???

I think I must have been half asleep or thinking of my E Type. It is of course a 4.2 Petrol. I wish it was a 3.8 when it comes to taxing it. I have just noticed I have missed a 2 of the milage, it has done 22,000 miles. I think I will have to go back to bed, my brain hurts or is it just old age.

That is an issue that many of us would love to have as well!

 

These are fabulous cars: what to expect: admiring glances, a smile on your face every time you get into the Jaguar, a speeding ticket or two...problems? very, very few and most likely, none at all.
PLEASE NOTE: these cars have very high electrical power requirements. REPLACE the battery now. And if you do not use it almost daily, fit a battery minder (CTEK is the preferred brand and is the one self-branded by Jaguar). Plug it in when the car is not in use and you will never have a problem. If the battery voltage drops (ageing battery, car left unlocked, etc...) you WILL get random warning lights, door lock issues, window issues, seat issues, convertible top issues...and there will be NOTHING wrong with these systems. The problem is always low battery voltage. So: fresh battery, and a battery minder, lock the car immediately when you get out to shut the computers down, and then relax: you have the most beautiful car on the road - except perhaps for the new F-Type coupé.....

 

Rust is not an issue. It's a great and fun car. The weakest link for the vintage you are looking at are: A/C drainage, and dash leather shrinkage. Those 2 issues alone will cost you a pretty sum. Do some searching on this forum for further info. It's still a great car and at the price you are at, if you don't make the plunge, some else will. PS. Good price or not.....check it out thoroughly.

 

Congratulations. I first read 2,000 miles and my eyes got a lot larger. Even 22,000 miles is not a lot as long as they were easy miles.

 

Thanks for all the replies and advice. I think it is time to get it up on the ramp and have a close examination of all the bits from a different angle. I am nearing the end of an extensions to the house so will have a bit more time to give it a close up look.

The upside down jag was not me, honest. I brought the picture in the right way up but for some reason it shows upsidedown. I have had this problem before with pictures when using my Ipad. I shall try and bring a picture in upside down and see if it ends up the right way up?

 

100% agree with getting a new battery, strongly suggest you get an AGM type battery. size 49 will fit. You have bought a great automobile, enjoy!

1. yes I am MD
2. Grad of Ohio State ( see you are from Columbus) ,now a true Gator!
3. I am in no way a push to the limits driver, as such I really cannot tell a lot of difference between the 4.2 and the 5.0. , they both can go like a bat-out -of-hell as far as I am concerned. The vert drives a little smoother, I think because it has continental dws tires vs hankook on the coupe. These are the 4th and 5th jags I have owned, BY FAR SUPERIOR to the prior cars. I LOVE 'EM!

 

The dash-leather shrinkage tends to be more of an issue in hot climates, from what I've seen reported. The AC drain problem can hit anywhere, though it ought to be more likely in dry climates where there isn't as much condensation to flow out of the drain and thus keep it open.

 

Well, my wife's car now sports a nice new tow bar, so that's the boat and trailer problem sorted. On a convertible, can you raise the small rear windows when the hood is down and if so how? I am still finding my way around the car at the moment and I suppose I should read the drivers handbook, but that would be like reading the instructions on flat pack kitchen units. Men just do not do that.

Contact member "whitexkr" as he has built a device to remotely control the convert top and have the rear quarter windows GO UP with the top down.

Check this out...


Otherwise without his invention (many XK/XKR owners have purchased it) the rear quarter panel remains ina down position with top down. Only his device makes it work the way to wish.

 

I have the Wrangler remote top and window controls installed in my 12 vert and I cannot say enough good things bout them form the price through the installation and ongoing operation as well as the man behind them.

 

Can you just buy the rear window module without the remote roof opening?

+I. I installed it myself - it's what the factory forgot. The cabin is so much calmer now at 70 mph with the top down and all 4 windows up and my rear wind blocker up. A huge improvement, well worth the cost.
