I got two different codes. Would that be for both banks? I thought maybe there was a code per cylinder and it happened in 2 of the 8 cylinders. I had it read at autozone They did not reset. They suggested I run injector cleaner and that it would go away after a while. Should I unhook the battery to reset? I’d like to find the real problem so it does not occur again.

I seem to remember a P0171 is Bank 1 (can't remember which side) and P0174 is Bank 2 (other side).
If you have both, a common vacuum line like PVC or even the Intake Sleeve may be leaking. Only one code, then it's a specific line to that side.
Don't quote me on the P-codes, my memory isn't what it used to be.

It takes around 5 drive cycles for the car to turn the EML light off if the fault is gone.

Default Codes

Thanks for the great feedback. Yes, those are the codes p0171, p0174. I did reset and thought they were gone, but they came back. Oh and also there was three codes, the third being the. Same p0174 but it said pending code. What exactly does that mean. Anyway all were cleared and came back within a few miles. Should I try cleaning maf sensor and /or the throttle body?

Pending codesmean that the OBD-II monitoring system has failed the operation of an emission control system at least once and if it fails again the Check Engine Light will be turned on and the malfunction becomes an Active code.

P0171 and P0174 checks in order unless you suspect something specific.
  • Air intake leak between MAF sensor and cylinder head. Check for leak from air intake system.
  • MAF sensor fault (low intake air flow). For MAF sensor tests. Electronic Engine Controls.

Exhaust leak (forward of catalytic converter). Check and rectify any exhaust leak prior to catalytic converter
  • Fuel filter, injector, system restriction. Check fuel system is free from restriction.

Air intake leaks are the most common

Default Great feedback - bigger problem

Thanks for the great feedback! I have not been on for a while because I have a bigger problem. When out for literally my first drive in the car a deer jumped right in front of me and boom. I didn’t think the damage was that bad purely superficial hood dent, bumper cover, headlights... but just got the body shop quotes and they are 14-16k. Waiting to hear back from insurance. Hoping it isn’t totaled. Another strange thing. On the way back from the body shop the center console locked up showing jag emblem and wouldn’t return to home. I ended up having to unhook the battery to get it back to normal. I don’t know what’s up with that.

Very sorry to hear... It seems you're ok?!
But that locked screen has happened to me on a few ocassions
1. battery change time.
2. bluetooth module reprogramming time.
3. insufficient (degraded) centre console ground.

Ouch! So sorry to hear about that but at least you were uninjured. Scroll down about half way on the forum page and you'll find a thread about an 08 Xk that was struck by a deer......some interesting info on insurance there.
Yeah, sometimes it just takes a hard reset to get the electronics back to normal.

I read the deer thread and it’s a concern of mine for the car to be totaled even thought the damage is very superficial. So far insurance has been great tho. I’m waiting to hear back after their adjusted took a look to audit the repair quote. I have Hagerty insurance for like collector cars, my car is only a weekend driver and you can do that. With this you quote the value of your car when u sign up for the policy, so there is no discussion about book value etc. however I still am not certain that it will get repaired and not totaled, but I’m optimistic based on how the insurance co has treated me so far. I’ll update as I find out.

Btw, I’m very thankful that the deer didn’t come thru the windshield , it could have been a lot worse.

Thanks for sharing. Boy did this thread get hijacked.
Audi makes are outstanding automobiles. My motorcycle partner has the car you just received and it is a doozy! Glad you leaped over the TT to get to the S5.
All of my previous Audi's gave me nothing but joy (my wallet may disagree).
