Default Newbie XKR MOT advice - failure emissions

Hi all, I'm learning some painful lessons with my first owned Jaguar 59 5.0 XKR which has 44k on the clock. Over the winter months I sore and garaged her while turning her over every week no problem bar one Sod's law the day before its MOT at a independent Jag garage. I followed the forums advice and charged the battery via the remote points. Turned over fine, although the battery charger still read low. Prior My brake pads low warning was on, so again with the forums help I ordered the redstuff pads for it front and back.

I drove the car 10+ miles to Garage with no problems felt perfect, the garage originally said I could wait an hour for it while they did the Mot. it was taken to another garage to do its mot. (Which felt a little poor) and I was then told it would be two hours. I left it with them, 5 hrs later no word so I have to call. It's failed on one single thing with an advisory rear pads wearing thin inner 3.5.1g . The failure was : exhaust emissions lambda reading after 2nd fast idle outside specified limits 7.3.D.3

I said ok have you fitted the pads, errrr no. So after 5 hours after setting expectations of 1 to 2 hours my confidence died with them. I find it bizarre as I have an old 05 2.5v6 tdi Audi that kicks clouds out which passes every year lol.

Does anybody know what this code is? Or can anybody give me a recommendation on a better garage in the Nottinghamshire area?

I'm thinking about a terraclean after reading posts again on here. But I must admit I'm surprised and thinking it's more its sat and not had a motorway blow out. Should I try changing air filters or some fuel flusher?

Thanks in advance

My advise is blunt... move to Ohio, USA, where never after it gets off the truck new does it ever have to be re-inspected! "Drive it till it explodes or kills us all with pollution! Have a nice day " - Ohio BMV

This is a mistake and might be a contributor to your problem. Cars in storage should be left alone and not started unless the car is to be driven (not sit and idle) for half an hour or so.

This is a side effect of putting heavy drain on the battery and not driving it long enough for a proper recharge. Idling the engine will not charge the battery fully. A low battery will set off all sorts of ghost codes as well as possibly losing the all important P1111 code that is required to pass an OBDII emission test.

These codes are meaningless other than internal UK MOT specifications. Have your garage supply that actual code- an alpha character followed by four numerals.

Do not waste money on terraclean or any other wild guess troubleshooting.

Start by having your battery charged to 100%. Find out what codes are stored in the computer. Take the car out for a good long drive to see if any of them repeat.

First, diesels of the age mentioned do not have to meet stringent emissions tests - crazy but true. It's why UK has terrible air quality but there ya go.

The funny "codes" are per MoT info - available online if you want to look.

The fail is on emissions (*) and in effect proves the MIL is not on (would be a 2nd fail) so there will be no OBD codes (may well be P1111, a pending status code, not a fault).

Usually the test place gives you the actual CO, HC, etc readings - and they're useful. But I've never gone to a place that then took the car elsewhere - it's just another chance for info/paper to get lost etc.

I'm guessing 59 means UK 59-reg i.e. latter part of 2009 and I must say I did not realise a 5.0 engine was an option then.

Figure out if you want to DIY and if so get an elm327 and look at fuel trims.

But first use it to check for P1000 or P1111.

Regardless I'd find a jag indy and avoid where you just went.

Terraclean will be a waste of money but if you feel inclined......

(*) for non-UK people: via a multi-gas analyser sniffing the exhaust

Default Model Year Confusion

The X150 alloy-bodied models began life as 2006 models in the UK and 2007 models in the USA with 4.2L engines. This caused some model year confusion. Engines (and body updates with LED tail lights) changed from 4.2L to 5.0L with the 2009 UK models and 2010 USA models. The 5.0L engine was never an option.

I trust this clears things up.

I find it ironic that a Yank has to explain Jaguar history to a Brit! Just another example of how topsy-turvy things are today. Russia is becoming more Capitalist and the USA is becoming more Socialist. GHU! Thankfully, Jaguar still has their head screwed on straight and remains true to their heritage.

I don't take a lot of notice when a specific engine got put in a particular model - it's just noise for my brain!

Seems very sad to lay a lovely car up instead of driving it

Hi all,

I've purchased the CTEK mxs 5.0 and charged the battery to 100% it showed no errors and sits at step 7 which the manual suggests is A-OK.

I turn the power on and everything works with no errors. However I have noticed that when I turn the car over it quickly flashes up on display battery not charging, however it does not remain lit and then no errors or complaints are seen after that?

Car does now seem to be running better and I noticed its idling lower after the initial turn over settles.

I changed the oil filter and the oil today also. The oil was very black but the filter looked fine, I obviously changed it out for the new one. Hoping this will help matters, but it was due in any case. Oil level trip says ok and the level looks to be sat directly in the middle of the two markers on the display.

Hi Good move to buy the CTek MXS 5. As you live in Nottinghamshire you have a decent Indy in JagTech who looked after my 07 XKR when I lived in Newtown Lindford for a short time. Wish we had them here in Oz

What happened with the emission and MOT?

That's who I took it to, but I was disappointed with them. I'll take it to the main now. I've just order some cataclean and air filters so I'll rebook MOT once I've investigated them and maybe just look at the MAF's to see the condition. I'm trying to decide on a elm327 also as I'd like to see what codes maybe listed.

Thought I'd update - The Good news is it passed the MOT and all the emissions passed. I asked the guy about the levels and how it was running. He said its spot on! So it could of been the oil/filter changed, air filters and cata-clean or perhaps battery being charged to 100% via my new CTEK or perhaps other center are full of it??

I've had the rear pads changed and had not even an advisory given either. Bad news I have noticed that one of the R plate on the brake caliper looks a little damaged - maybe from the brake change? I can't be sure as I've never noticed or specifically looked before... can you buy just the plate with R on it? (its not too bad - just glad to have the car back on the Road!)

thanks all
