Assuming that the suggested fixes don't work have you contacted the dealer and discussed this problem with the service manager. They may have seen this condition in the past and have a method to get the car either corrected or transported to where they can resolve the issue.

Instructions from YOUR handbook on how to reset inertia switch.
Resetting the switch
If no fuel leak is apparent:
1. Press the engine START/STOP button,
without pressing the brake pedal, to turn
the ignition to convenience mode (ignition
off). Wait for approximately 10 seconds.
2. Press the engine START/STOP button
again, without pressing the brake pedal, to
turn the ignition on. Wait 30 seconds.
3. Make a further check for fuel leaks.
4. Press the START/STOP button with the
brake pedal depressed to start the engine.

Here is the towing procedure - should be page 228 from your owner's handbook. (Skip step 2 for now)

Will your car NOT do step 5 - allow Neutral selection?, If no, do your brake lights go on when the brakes are applied?

Towing procedure
1. The vehicle should be parked on firm, level
ground, with the parking brake on and the
gear selector in P (Park).
2. Secure the towing attachment from the
recovery vehicle to the front towing eye.
See TOWING POINTS (page 227).
3. Dock the Jaguar Smart Key and switch on
the ignition. See GENERAL INFORMATION
(page 129).
4. Apply the foot brake and release the
parking brake.
5. With the foot brake still applied, select N
(Neutral).
6. The vehicle can now be towed a maximum
of 0.8 km (0.5 miles), at a maximum speed
of 48 km/h (30 mph).
7. Upon arrival at the destination, ensure
wherever possible that the vehicle is
parked on firm level ground.
8. Apply the parking brake and select P
(Park).
9. Switch off the ignition and undock the
Jaguar Smart Key.
10. Remove the towing attachment from the
towing eye.

I have found out the problem with the front brakes coming on when jacked up at the rear under the Diff , this allows the rear wheels to hang down at each side and some how activates the front brakes, I lowered the rear down onto wheel dollies and no front brakes ,so the car is now in the shop ,but still no crank.

were you able to spin the rear wheel to see if the electronic brake lock has been cancelled.

Was able to get the car out of gear through the emercency release located in the console. Had it towed to my mechanic where it was diagnosed as the starter. Replaced the starter, cost me $350.00, and everything is back to normal.

When I Lowered the car onto the dollies I could not tell if the rear brakes had been released or not , I assume the the rear end would be locked in with being in park . When all wheels where on the ground you could rock the car back & forth so all 4 wheels must have been unlocked.

Sorry I forgot you were unable to get it out of park
What is the car doing now with a new battery when you press the start button without touching the brake pedal? what warnings are you getting?

BTW tberg does not have the same car as you as far as I know. Neither do I, we just feel bad for you. Wish some of the others who have your exact car would chime in.

Have a deco at this thread for the XK8. It's probably similar to our XKs

There are two sensors on the brakes one for brake on and one for brake off.

If you think what happened when this started you probably stood on the brakes as the car still had the battery charged connected and from then it hasn't started . It has to be brake related and the sensor.

When your mechanic gets back with you on what they found please let us know. This one really has my shorts twisted on what the cause was.

This is the most disappointing thing about helping out.
They dont have the decency of returning the generosity.
In other words they were never as generous as they expected you to be.

I thought I almost had the same situation a few hours ago.
Locked the car and walked out. Came back , pull door handle and sit in car.
Press start ... Nothing.
press start without pressing brake ... Nothing
get out of car and try opening trunk ... Nothing.
use key in fob and see trunk lights working fine
front headlights work
press fob buttons and no response
put fob in center slot and keeps getting ejected
call wife and ask her to pick up a CR2032 battery
put in new fob battery and starts right up

so may be sometimes it's also the FOB battery that can cause some strange issues

I'm just happy it was simple fix - woowhooo !

let us know if you find out any info on what was the root cause of your issue.

Im sorry for the delay the service dept. have been sending their reply to the wrong address.
I have just received this today regarding the repair.

The High speed communication network was down between modules not talking to each other. Traced back to connector, behind the right side kick panel not connected. ( connector IP003 )

Hope this will help others. I cannot understand how it can be connected one min. and then not ?. Bernie

Unless you were just lucky all of this time and it finally gave up the ghost. This one is really a strange one but I guess anything is possible!

Glad it is fixed and you are back to cruising though.

Thanks for reporting, Bernie. It sees that this was a fault in your particular car then, but it serves as good information for all of us.
