Oil change

Way back in post #2 Graham called this correctly ! Stating an opinion on engine oil is as well received as discussing religion, politics - or telling a guy his wife and/or kids are ugly !!!
Really, with modern engines and oils there are no bad choices anymore. Well, other than never changing the oil...I bet no-one has ever had a lubrication-related failure.
Hell, a friend of mine had the local 'quick change' place forget to put in *any* new oil. Went around a long block before he discovered it, and the car ran fine for years afterwards until he sold it.
I think its all psychological - its one of the few car-related choices we can actually make these days, so we attach too much importance to it.
When I had a Trawler Powerboat, I used to do regular Oil Analyses by a reputable laboratory. I sent my Jag oil in a few times (when I changed it at 5k mi intervals), and they said it was still perfectly fine.
For what its worth: I use Mobil/1 synthetic, change at around 5k miles - and your wife's homely !

Vehicle Care Manual
It's in the usual low key "sealed for life" Jaguar language,
but the intent is clear on the face of the statement.
Most automotive professionals have the understanding that
severe service mandates a halving of both mileage and time
intervals. This is because they deal with a range of makes
whose manufacturers are a little more forthcoming on what
severe service means.
In addition to short journeys, the other characteristics
usually mentioned are extended idling, stop and go traffic,
and frequent acceleration.
In other words, anything other than long highway journeys.
Not to mention, typical usage for most drivers.
I believe I have previously copy and pasted the same information
in reply to the same niggle.
The Vehicle Care Manual is supplied with every Jaguar and is available
as a download for most models in the stickies at the top of the model
specific forum sections.

Ya, that harshed my gig too. On the orher hand, here's Ford's definition from 2004, keeping in mind they were Jag's parent company at the time
"Towing
Heavy Commercial Use
Operating in Dusty Conditions
Off Road Operations"
So like 99% of us you might/possibly/maybe/hopefully be able to follow the factory interval after all , even though it's not quite as liberal as you had hoped.
