Default Which oil filter should I use?

I get my oil and filter changed at my Jag dealer every 10k miles. But in between at the 5k mark I go to a EZ lube or Jiffy. I know these guys use the cheapest filter they can buy so I'd like to bring in my own when I go in. Any suggestions on which filter to buy? Thanks

Everybody has their favorite. Mine's Purolator, or Pep Boys Proline (a purolator).

Napa Gold or Carquest premium are true 'premium filters'.

Very important to stick with a well known name brand. Purolator Mann or Fram, to name a few, are well made and reliable.

Those "private labeled" from big box retailers should be avoided. If they "hype" that it's made by Fram, it does not meet Fram's specs. They stop the assembly line, change materials and manufacture that filter to meet the price point.

The oil filters media is designed to capture a specific size (micron) of engine debris. The microns that are microscopic do not present a problem, nor do those that are so large that they wont pass through moving internal parts. It is those microns that can "wedge" between the internally lubricated components that cause engine wear.

Oil is oil, so long as it meets or exceeds the manufactures requirements. The oil filter is the "kidney" and as such you should pay a few extra dollars and buy the best.

My choices: Purolator or NAPA Gold (made by WIX)

I use Jaguar branded oil filters on my wife's VDP...they are available from Coventry West for $19 each.

I like to stick with OEM; why not? Baldwin filters are really good in general. I haven't tried to cross reference them for the XK yet.

Thanks for the input guys. Anyone have experience with Bosch, Royal Purple or K & N? To be clear I'm not trying to save a few bucks on filters, I'd just like to know what to stay away from.

Basically, stick with factory or well known names and avoid odd names that are orange and try to pass Frantz.

I was wondering about this also... do any of you guys buy filters online? Was wondering if anybody has had good experiences with a particular online retailer. Maybe I'm just being paranoid about getting a filter that doesn't actually fit, but it seems that finding matching part numbers is more difficult than I would have thought (Purolator's site, for instance, does not seem to find anything for a 2011 XK, though I'm sure they make a filter that fits).

Only for OEM filters and that was on my VDP. I thought my indy would use OEM, but did not so I plan to buy some online.

Checked Baldwin Filters | Home and they have one for the XK. That is what I'll use the next time. They make very high quality filters, perhaps the best....

ctsemicon, I looked at the K & N website and they don't have one that fits the 2007 XK.

TheMCP, Amazon is hard to beat for on line purchases.

Thanks for the input guys.

Interesting... it seems there are more options for the 4.2L motor than there are for the 5L.

Yeah, I live in the middle of nowhere and buy tons of stuff from Amazon because of it. They only appear to have 2 filters listed for the 2010+ XK though, and one of them is this one:
Amazon.com: Wix Filter 49381 CASE OF 6: Automotive Amazon.com: Wix Filter 49381 CASE OF 6: Automotive

Since the product description on that page says its for the 07 - 09, it makes me wary. Dunno. Usually Amazon is great for selection... doesn't seem to be the case here though.

Here is an article on "The Best Oil Filters..." Granted, like any article on the internet, proceed cautiously. The brands they recommend do seem to be reasonable.

Being that you're changing oil and filter twice as often as Jag recommends, I don't think it makes much difference which one you install.

Mikey, I guess I'm just a throw back to changing every 3000 mi with conventional oil. I'd like to reach 150k and think I have a better chance changing at 5k oil changes.

Your not alone.... I'm old school, and swap conventional every 3k as my routine. The joys of being a long time shade tree mechanic as well as certified aircraft mechanic (past life) tell me not to do it any other way.

With past cars I've always used Fram or WIX. With the Jag and age, I now just Jiffylube each 3k.

CleverName, aircraft influence me as well, I just sold my T210N. Airplanes have a tendency make metal because of tolerances and heating but old habits die hard. One owner suggested just changing only filter, not a bad suggestion but I'd still have to take it to a shop..\
