Default oil question

Sorry I tried search - something not working correct, type in word "oil" search finds nothing???

I have converted all my prior vehicles Jags included to full synthetic oil. All break-in periods have been with non-synthetic, I feel this has served me well. Any thoughts or recommendations on the XKR?

'Oil' is only of the most frequently discussed topics here- and often turns into the most heatedly debated topic as well. Attempting to get people to come to a consensus on which type is best is futile. If the owners manual makes no mention against using syn, then choose the viscosity that suits your climate and away you go.

From what I've read, and I'm not a petroleum engineer, synthetic oil "drains down" from the cylinder walls far more slowly than does dino oil. So, if you rarely drive your car, you're much better off with synthetic oil since it will better protect your engine at start-up. Also, how you drive (engine rpms, trip length, climate/temp/dust/etc.) also play a role. Oil, both syn and dino, never wears out; it just gets dirty and the additives lose their efficacy. Either one can adequately protect your engine, provided it meets the manufacturer's specs. Stop/go short trips are engine killers, since the water in the crankcase never gets hot enough to evaporate. Note that H2O is a natural by-product of internal combustion; you can see it dripping from your tailpipe sometimes, and as a cloud of water vapor when it's cold outside. If you rarely drive your car, you should change your oil (syn or dino) at least once a year or preferably sooner, since water in the crankcase can become corrosive. Oil is cheaper than engines. Just my $0.02.
