Older tires--lightly used--replace anyway?

Should I replace tires based on tire age alone? Replacing tires every 6 years regardless of wear seems to be a not uncommon recommendation. I have about 6000 miles on my 7 year old Continental Extreme Contact DWS. Excellent tread, no sidewall cracking, no uneven wear, no sign of any damage. Garaged car with very limited harsh weather and UV exposure. I know that tire compounds do deteriorate with time but throwing these "good looking tires" away just seems wasteful.

My new to me ‘15 XKR has 5 yers old tires, with plenty of tread, and look good. But, if I press my finger nail into them, I can tell they have lost plyability and feel kind of hard. I know they should be replaced based upon age, but a little situation reinforced that. Coming out of a sharp turn yesterday, a pressed the throttle just a bit…and the *** end came around. I have a tire appointment tomorrow.

I went with Michelin Pilot Sport 4s. Ordered them yesterday at our local Discount Tire. Same prices as Tire Rack…plus all the adder$$. I’m also having the TPMS sensors replaced, for $275. Tires are supposed to be in today. May or may not have them installed before end of day.
