Default Reason they say replace tyres at 7 years

Garaged car with very limited harsh weather and UV exposure. I know that tire compounds do deteriorate with time but throwing these "good looking tires" away just seems wasteful.

About 7 years ago the US government banned the use of sulfur and/or mercury in tyres. These substances were there to stop dry rotting when the tyre is exposed to moisture and sunlight, UV rays. As I see it tyres kept inside should still last as long if looked after properly. I change mine when sidewall cracking is apparent. The quickest tyres to dryrot are my trailer tyres, they are always unprotected and facing the same way. I am going now to cover them to keep the UV light off them.

My new to me ‘15 XKR has 5 yers old tires, with plenty of tread, and look good. But, if I press my finger nail into them, I can tell they have lost plyability and feel kind of hard. I know they should be replaced based upon age, but a little situation reinforced that. Coming out of a sharp turn yesterday, a pressed the throttle just a bit…and the *** end came around. I have a tire appointment tomorrow.

What tire model did you choose?

Anytime I've replaced old tires (like more than 6 years), the car has been smoother and quieter. Well worth it. LOL the *** end of a 5.0 XKR breaking loose is going to be a problem no matter what tires you have!

I went with Michelin Pilot Sport 4s. Ordered them yesterday at our local Discount Tire. Same prices as Tire Rack…plus all the adder$$. I’m also having the TPMS sensors replaced, for $275. Tires are supposed to be in today. May or may not have them installed before end of day.
