Maybe a cleaning solution that soaked in through the stitching?

...that is 100% my guess and i think correct.

I had all my windows tinted yesterday, including the front windshield. Of course they use a a soapy solution to set the film. I think it must have took a few hours to develop as when i picked up the car i did not see it. A few hours later i came out to the car and it jumped out like a sore thumb. This was not there when i bought the car in March as i went over the interior with a fine tooth comb.

question is what can be done?
I am not getting a new dash out of these guys that did the job.

my dash was pristine except for a small 2 mm scratch in the brushed aluminum trim above the glove box. To say i am really bummed is and understatement.

Im thinking of just using some leather conditioner on it to see if i can bring it back. but it appears to me the grain has been damaged by the water/solution?

Gee - that sucks, they could have easily used cling film to cover the dash while doing the job.

Is the dash blistered up or is it "dented" down? Hard to tell. Just wondering if you could inject some water and them vac it out through the stitching.

The first thing to do is to use a good leather cleaner and to follow with a good (meaning non-silicone) leather conditioner. For both puproses: LEXOL leather cleaner and leather conditioner or Autoglym Leather Cleaner and Leather Balm. There are others but these two produce very good results.

Same thing happened on my 2013. The previous owner had the windshield tinted and water goes everywhere. These tint shops just want to get the job done and never bother putting anything down to protect a leather dash. The leather is distorted now. I dont think anything will fix it.

to me, I think the liquid that was used actually had some solvent in it and when it collected (through the stitching) in those areas it destroyed the foam beneath the leather. Replacement is the only solution.
of course, just my opinion
sorry to be a downer!

Hello,
To me it's not the water itself who caused the trouble.A great way to clean leather is a mix of 80%water+20% black soap , so I seriously doubt water might have damaged it.
I guess they might have used a mix of water and/or alcohol (which evaporate quicker and degrease the glass) which eventually disolved some of the glue and overdried the leather...Alcohol is also a thiner for leather dyes ... so I'm almost sure something like this is involved..

I would suggest you hydrate the leather with natural product. It'll darken the places where the damaged happened, and it would nourish the leather deeply ,giving it it's thickness back.
Get some "real beef foot oil" and massage the whole leather (do your seats at same time) with it.Insist on the places where the damages happened.
To me it might solved most, if not all the problem.

If it was the tinting shop then that is disgraceful. It's part of their job to protect the dashboard and they have totally failed. Here in the UK I would go back to them and demand that they make good the damage at their expense. If they refused they would very quickly find themselves in the County Court Small Claims track.

@VegasFPace that's shocking. I feel for you. And as @kj07xk says, it's alcohol or some kind of cleaning agent that's done that. It is fixable, and like @RichardS if it happened to me there's no way I'd wear it. The shop would fix it or I'd take them to the small claims court. That stitched leather dash top is one of the truly lovely features of our cars. It reminds me of advice I was once given by an even-more-pedantic-than-me friend to take detailed pictures before handing a car over for work to be done to it. Of course I never do...

I dont know if this is of any help, but in Germany a black dash from a late XKR with ivory stitching is offered:

https://www.kleinanzeigen.de/s-anzei...95478-223-2035

https://www.kleinanzeigen.de/s-anzei...23897-223-2035

If you are interested regarding details (price, transportation/shipping etc.) I could give the company a call.

If you could that would be really appreciated. Shipping would be to Las Vegas NV.. 89135. With my line of work I may have other shipping options also.. I could make a trip of it fly to get it and checking it as oversized baggage/or cargo on the way back

PM with any details you get. It looks in great shape. Just dusty

His reply yesterday on my request was that the dash should be in really good condition - price is 750 Euros (currently 822 US Dollar). I will ask him if he can ship it to your country and send you a PM.
