Passive vs active

Passive vs active
This refers back to the question of the key fob. I've seen various posts that say don't leave your key fob within 25 feet of the car or it will drain the battery. I can't find any info on this either in the OM or MM or even at the dealers. I believe the key fob in my 2012 is a passive unit meaning it does not send a signal out to the car until you press one of the buttons. On the other hand my Lexus fob is active as when I approach the car it will wake up the puddle and interior lights without pushing a button. Today I parked and locked the car in the garage and plugged in a volt meter and left the key next to the car. Several hours later I came back and the voltage didn't even change a tenth of a volt. So hard to say what the function is.

You are correct and I have corrected people a number of times on the subject.
The X150 doesn't continuously search for a fob. On a car with passive entry, if the car is locked it will look for one when you pull on the door handle or try and open the tailgate and the range is only one meter.
On cars with either entry system the RF receiver listens out for the RF signal from the fob when a button is pressed. If you just walk up to the car without pressing any buttons it has no idea that you are there whether it has passive entry or not.
It will also check to see if a key is in the vehicle when you open and close the tailgate while the rest of the car is locked. If it detects a key inside the car it will sound an error warning and the tailgate will remain unlocked.
The rest of the time it doesn't care. You can even leave the fob inside the car and it will still drop out of convenience mode and go to sleep.
