I’m just about to take delivery of my first XKR, which I’m very excited about!
With the wealth of experience on this site, what is the best iPhone holder? Is a vent holder better, or something that sticks to the dash, or something on the glass… ?
Sorry friend, the best iPHONE holder is locked inthe boot. Perhaps I've seen enough of the results of distracted drivers. I will continue to preach "HANG UP AND DRIVE"!
I too use the CD slot for mounting my Galaxy. I like it in the slot because it does not interfere with my view through the windshield. The only downside to that is I have to look away from the windshield momentarily when using Android auto or Wayse.
I don't have one in my current 2014 XK but here is the Brodit vent clip with the detector holder in my previous 2007 XK:
This one fits to the top and bottom of the vent so there is no risk of damaging the vent vanes. Brodit also do ones which fits on the side of the console.
I pulled out the cup holder insert, and keep the phone in that now larger space in the console.
Which is what I did, couldn't be happier. Just have to find a "safe" place to store cup holder so it can be replaced when my family come to sell the car after I am gone!
After looking around at various options, I eventually went with a suction cup to the windshield over by the driver side A-pillar as my best option, though still don't really like it. I only use it for navigation, because the system in the car is out of date not to mention slow.
A 2-meter USB cable was just perfect for plugging into the glove box power outlet and running through the dashboard over to the phone holder.
Even if I don´t phone ( which I do not like in the Jag anyway ) I sometimes need a navigation.

I don't have an answer for you Hermann. I have CarPlay in my car and I still rarely look at the screen. When using any navigation, Apple, Google, Waze, they all nag the hell out of you before every turn so I never need to look at the map itself. "Prepare to turn right", "Turn right in 1000 feet", "Turn right at the next light", "Turn right in 50 feet", Turn right". Damn thing cuts into my music time:-)

I used the in-car nav last week and she kept telling me "continue straight" while driving on the freeway with no nearby exits. Still, better than the wife saying "turn left here" as we go through the intersection.
Thanks all for your thoughts!
If it wasn't for needing traffic information from Waze, I'd happily not have the phone out at all, and just enjoy driving the car.
I've been very pleased with this small ball-type mount for the past two years. Size allows it to fit pretty much anywhere (mine's on the upper left corner of the head unit trim). Very unobtrusive, holds tight even through a rubber or leather case. $20 or so. Sticks on with mounting tape, stays firmly attached. Really happy with it. I mount the metal plate a bit above center, since I rarely position my phone sideways.
I developed two versions of a replacement ashtray for holding a phone in the center console of an XK.
For phones that fit in the ashtray, there is one version has an integrated Qi charger so when the phone is tilted into the ashtray space it
is automatically charged from the cigarette lighter.
For phones that don’t fit the second version provides a series of supports that a cell phone mount can be clipped to, instead of the vents on the dash:

first off..the XKR has hands free free calling built into the infotainment system.. second many use their phone to steam music not make calls, the holder will stop the phone from flying off the console while driving and listening to music …unless you want to police that experience as well
When will people learn that driving is a serious responsibility and not a frivolous activity. I respect your legal rights to do as you wish. I'll try to remember that when I visit my 18 year old grandson's grave.

when manufacturers quit pushing...
I saw a new motorcycle advert that was proclaiming how great their 7" screen was and how you could navigate 'it' with gloves on...I'm too old for this type of (non) thinking.
