I would question what you have been told. The Bovee is as I understand it simply a Bluetooth receiver. The iPhone has a Bluetooth radio built in, so it's a transmitter. Both the iPhone 8 and the Bovee 1000 can use a Bluetooth streaming protocol called A2DP, so there should be no reason for the Bovee not to receive streaming audio transmitted from the iPhone. As far as I know, you don't need an iPod, just the Bovee (connected to the car) and your iPhone 8. One form of the Bovee has a female 30-pin connector, which is often called an "iPod connector" so maybe this is where the mention of the iPod came in.

Do you still have the Bovee? Is there a connector in the car to which you can attach the other end of the cable that came with the Bovee? If so, the rest should be Bluetooth pairing and connection, and you're in business.

The title pretty much says it all: I have no aux / usb input on my 2006 stereo, but of course the bluetooth connectivity is still there...hence the question: could it be used to circumvent that limitation and play the music that's on one's phone? Or is it just restricted to phone calls?

Thanks for the info!!
I listen to audio on my car radio via an external/fm transmitter adapter also on my Ford bluetooth radio (SYNC). My earlier Panasonic dvd player/blue tooth radio will only play from cell phone.

FYI, the Bovee 1000 he references is the 30 pin connector style designed to hook on to the Jaguar IPOD cable, it has no other output option. In previous instances it has been found to be very sensitive to proper cabling, in the case below a guy simply bought an Ipod adapter and fixed his Bovee issue:
