There is one strict rule about detectors to live by.... IF you get pulled over (they are not infallible) you stand a chance of a warning.... right up until they see the detector, which then guarantees you a ticket regardless. For that reason alone I will not do a permanent mount. I can reach forward with my right hand, pop the detector and mount off the glass, and unplug it in one swift move... all while getting ready to pull over...

A good book worth reading-> "A speeders Guide to avoiding tickets" by James Eagen. Explains the officers mentality, and why certain steps are critical...
Make an odd move like that during a traffic stop in Southern Nevada and you will be looking at the business end of the officer's gun when he gets to the door.

Highly unlikey unless he is on my bumper when he hits his lights. Beyond that, tinted glass obscures the simple motion.

I'm a bit of a Radar detector junkie. I'd recomend doing some reading at www.radardetectorforums.org.

My suggestions would be if you want quiet, get the new Passport Max, or second chce would be the 9500ix.

For long Range, the Max is supposed to be in the running, but it isn't out yet so time will tell. Right now I'd go with the latest Escort Redline with BS/RDR feature (can turn off anti falsing software increasing range, then limit scaned frequencys to only where radar is decreasing falses.) Redline is also Specter undetectable if in VA. I run a Redline with Escort Live to help quiet it down and am very happy.

Valentine one is also a good choice and has the feature of Arrows to locate the source. Range is very good, but falling behind the newest Escort models.

Escort 8500 X50 Black is a good budget choice, range is very good.

For custom installed, I'd avoid the K40 products. My First choice woule STI-R Plus from bell, same radar head as Escort Redline in a custom install (Escort 9500ci is about the same, comes with crappy Laser jammer and costs more). The lower Escort custom installed units work well, but with the cost I'd spend the extra for the Sti-R

I had two of the 9500ix and both were defective right out of the box.
Now I swear by the Valentine One.

Using the Cobra XRS 9970G. Has been reliable and I do like the Red Light camera and speed trap notifications. Detector is a bit large and I had to mount it under the rear view mirror. With a convertible, the screeen is impossible to view anywhere else while the top is down.

Here's the latest full test, it was last fall, so there are some changes that aren't represented.

1. Escort Max, just now coming out so wasn't available, no tests done yet with production units, pre-production units seem to be on par with Redline from this test.

2. Valentine One connect- Wasn't out with this, but this test shows tests of V1 with Guard off. I have a 3.893 V1 and with guard off it never stops going off, will alert EVERY time you meet another car with a detector to me making it unusable. With V1 Connect (bluetooh smartphone interface, doesn't use internet, just allows detector settings and displays) you can do "custom sweeps" where it will only scan frequency's that are actually used, greatly reducing the falses. I have one and V1 Connect, and run custom sweeps with Guard on, that said, the V1 is religated to back-up status as the Redline thoroughly stomps it now.

3. Redline- Since this test Redline now has an upgrade that adds RDR Off and band segmentation, this makes the performance very similar to the STI-R with band segmentation as in the test (same radar horn, Sti-R is the remote mount version) This is the detector I am running and I have a large collection of detectors (V1, Redline, 9500ix, 9500ci, Smartradar and X50 black).

One further thought, I didn't mention Smartradar, it's not a range champ, similar to the Valentine One for range, but it does offer one unique advantage. Its designed for use with Escort Live and a Smartphone. I've got mine mounted behind the rear view mirror on my Thunderbird, and it doesn't stand out very much as it has no display (has a plug in display, but I don't use it), and I use the smartphone display for all controls and information. With the top down I feel that its unlikely that someone would notice it to swipe it. That said, if I'm somewhere with lots of foot traffic I pull it, but otherwise I leave it up. Also if stopped, the LEO that pulls me over is very unlikely to notice it or think its a detector which can make a difference in ticket issued.
