Default Radio scrolling

Hi, I have a 2008 Jaguar XK and have seen many posts about the radio scrolling and not picking up a channel. Mine is doing this on both AM and FM. I replaced the complete audio uiit with a used one and had the same problem. Then installed an aftermarket antenna and this did not fix the issue. The navagation system, CD and phone all work but not the radio.

Any ideas what I should try next other than taking it to the dealership, I am wondering if it could have anything to do with a fuse as I beleive the antenna is powered?

Thanks

Hi, I had the very thing happen to me while on my firt shake-down run yesterday. I decided to try the radio and it scrolled through most of the channels. However, when I reached my driveway and was stationary, I was able to to tune in a number of statin by manually flipping through them. Try this before you shoot it!

The fuse for the antenna is F4 (10A) in the rear-seat fusebox.

...and this means what? The antenna has a fuse? What will they think of next?

Thanks I will give it a shot. When I first bought the car some of the channels were working and is why I was not concerned. Now it will not pick up anything, anywhere. I called the dealership and they told me there is no recall for this but I see a lot of folks are having the same issue.

Well, I expect it's power for the antenna motor (for the early XKs that have the old-type retracting whip antenna), and possibly for a small signal amplifier.

That doesn't mean it's without a fuse though. Most of the short antennas actually are 'active' meaning they do signal amplification prior to sending it to the radio. If you fail to power them, they fail to provide anything.

That being said, what is this AM/FM thingy everyone is talking about? I thought that it was a white noise generator circuit for helping you to fall asleep at the wheel with random outbursts of people talking about random things. Is it true it can play music too?

Ah, no, that's the Sirius or DAB digital aerial (which doesn't have its own fuse). If you don't have the extending stalk, the AM/FM aerial is in the rear spoiler.

The threshold on the seek function seems set very high to me. A station has got to be pretty strong to make the scan stop. I think it may be a feature, not a fault. When I manually tune in the stations they seem plenty strong enough.

Yes, I agree. When I returned home, I was able to tune in any number of stations and lock them.

I tried the manual stop and was only able to pick up one channel. So the problem has to be the antenna. Strange that the aftermarket antenna did not work. Must be a user issue and will try again with the manual adjustment. Guys thanks for the suggestions

Then look for a fuse, as was mentioned.

You might want to check the antenna connections as well. The co-ax cable runs from the antenna either direct towards the Audio unit, or (if you have VICS or RDS traffic info for the Nav system) to a splitter box underneath it, then to the audio system. In either case, there's also a connector (TM090) under the centre console (RH side) that feed the antenna signal into the main instrument panel wiring. So there are several possibilities:
  • Co-ax has come off aerial
  • Co-ax has come off splitter
  • Co-ax has come off TM090
  • Co-ax has come off the audio unit

Found the issue, I wiggled the cable into the radio and not only did I pick up channels but it stopped scrolling. The only problem is that as soon as I moved it or tried to put the audio unit back in I went back to scrolling again. The good news is that I know what it is and can give specific directions to get it repaired. Folks thanks for your input

I'd like to know more. What cable? Where? how did you access it? Any info would be appreciated.

Where the actual Co-ax cable runs into the radio. It is located at the lower back left corner of the audio unit as you are facing it. Take the trim piece off the audio unit, it pops off by pulling it, be careful to use constant pressure as its held on by plastic pins on the back of the trim piece. There are 8 allen screws on holding in the radio and 2 more of a different size just below the central air vents, remove all of them, the 4 shiny ones are in the middle. Then slide the unit out, from the back, its the cable at the lower right side as you face the back, pull the cable and twist it a little sideways, mine worked then, stopped scrolling and picked up the channel. I would wiggle it and it would work but as soon as I let go it stopped working. Now going to get the connector fixed. Hope this helps

Possibilities:
  • Fracture in centre conductor of coax near the plug
  • Bad joint beween center conductor & pin on plug
  • Bad joint beween coax screen & plug body
  • Centre sleeve in socket has been spread, so pin doesn't fit tightly
  • Socket has bad joint onto board in audio unit
