My ash tray lid is stuck open (feels disconnected) and I'd like to get that fixed.
The service manual shows 4 bolts holding the assembly. Are all 4 bolts accessible when the trim panel is removed, or does the entire console need to come out?
Lacking patience, I decided to dive in and see what I could find.
I first removed the center console trim but could only see two bolts for the astray knowing that there were two more in front of it.
I next pulled off the driver side console cover and the nav cover and noticed that there's a small panel at the forward end of the ashtray that I could flip out. That allowed me to grab the displaced cover and remove it.
It then became obvious that the cover had simply come unlatched from the carriage. After a little fiddling I was able to place it on and snap it back into place.
It's all together now and mostly works. LOL. It closes nicely but now will not stay open when I push it forward. Looking at the lesser of two evils, I'd much rather have it closed!
My cover also wouldn't stay closed, but some fiddling with the angles when I pushed it in found a sweet spot. Now I know how to properly push, and it stays open all the time when I want it to stay that way. It also closes perfectly well.
Course, yours may be broken somewhere and this idea may not be of any benefit to you.
I have Cabrio Bob's ADU so mine's permanently open
It would have been particularly frustrating to get the lid back together and then not be able to keep it open to see the ADU! I'll accept it as happy coincidence that I've mounted my display elsewhere. 😋
When I first got my car, that cover wouldn’t stay open either. Bought another full ash tray unit on ebay, so I could see how it was supposed to work.
Took out the center console (only way to fully remove the ash tray), and found that there is a small plastic piece that does the latching action, and it had fallen out of place.
Put it back in place, and it worked for a couple of times, but then fell out again.
So I took a thin piece of wire, found a couple places to attach the wire, such that the wire ran under the plastic piece to support it in the proper place, and put the unit back together.
Has worked fine ever since my repair.
