Foolish?? Only to not follow the recommendation that is one of the first question generally asked by jaguar hotline to techs when dealing with general computer/or potential issues at hand. "did you do a hard reset?"
im blue in the face on this one, cannot count on all the fingers and toes of all the techs in the shop how many times this has fixed issues concerning modules. And it is not a band aid it is a fix just the same as rebooting your pc or modem when it locks up. Doesn't streach and reason why, yes because you dont need to have a longer than need cable other than to reach the terminal. In this day and age of plastic on everything and pennies no longer being made of copper due to cost. Theres no reason add weight or cost by making a longer than needed cable. The 10mm wrench in your hand you just undid the negative cable with, works real well at bridging the gap needed
foolish tech out

On my '94 XJS there is a wire somewhere behind the center console; you ground that wire and the code/light is gone and it won't return unless there is a new discrepancy. In fact, I now have a mini pushbutton switch at the front lip of the center glove box that does the same ECU reset (shuts off the code and the engine light) by grounding the reset wire.
Can't something similar be done with the X308?
Cheers,

hi, I also have an 08 XKR. Will resetting the ECU clear the check engine light?Once in a whileI get the check fuel filler cap sign on and then it goes away followed by the check engine light. When I take it to the dealer they turn it back off but it's a pain to go wait at the dealer. Can this be handled by just unplugging and replugging the battery?
thanks in advance.

Good GOD in Jaguar Land blessed my brother and his S type R
.
Here is a little story that would, I hope, entertain you ;
My brother received this car as a gift from his associates. He used it regularly for about 3-4 weeks, then some strangest things happened ;
• One day, after washed his car thoroughly. Upon his starting then some idiot lights popped ;
• So, what has happened to the Brakes / Engine / DSC / Cruise ???? , he scrambled to find the accelerator did NOT work either. The Genius did not have any power ?
• The first thing came to his mind was my voice, “ Don’t You Go Near This Genius “… alas he did get the car already.
• The next morning, he called in his trusted mechanic who couldn’t do anything much except plugged in some reading, all the monitors said was that , “ FAULT – FAULT – FAULT “ …
• After the mechanic guy left, he called me and told me what happened. I then called several service men who only said, “ Bring the genius over ( by a slider truck ) and we will fix his majesty up for ya “
Then we started browsing through this Jaguar forum, and found several “ Fix it tips “…
There was a guy who said , “ Disconnect the battery on this damned thing, wait for a couple of hours, then start the car …… “
We did, but it didn’t work !
My brother is a fighter, he won’t give up, and he read on, the Jaguar forum !
One guy said try to clean the electric connecting points may be clean the MaF too…..
This was in the evening, my brother found one dealer that carried CRC MaF Spray Cleaner in the area, who would send it to him via an express horse.
Cans of CRC MaF Spray & Contacts Cleaner !
A gang of Express HorseMan, famously work in my town. Even Mark, our ex-Prime Minister joined them … on the part-time basis.
My brother called me up, said what he would do. Since it was late at night, I suggested that he should lite 7 incense sticks, and pray to the lord of Jaguar land that, with all the luck… his Jaguar S type R should be back to normal situation.
He did cleaned all the points + the MaF… wait for 2 hours, then restart the car… nada….. nothing happened.
He gave up, frustrated… and could hardly sleep.
Then the next morning came, he said he would give it another try… turned the key, it started…..
… and it accelerated… normal…..
.......... and all the idiot lights... GONE !
May the good GOD in Jaguar land bless my brother and his beloved S type R,… my brother promised he would never smoke in the car anymore !

Dear Ralph,
Thanks for the tips, please also tell Jaguar GOD that my brother would now behave ; never yawn when drive the thing ( after half an hour with his newest CLS 6.3 AMG ), not swear while put his hands on Jaguar steering wheel and never want to put the Jaguar hood ornament on to ruin the aero-dynamic any more, ... and that's the whole truth !

I resently broke my fob and the key came out so I tried holding the key with some pliers and was not thinking about having the chip right next to the key when I tried turning it on and the computer locked me out how can I reset it without replacing the computer that is what the dealership wants me to do

Do you have a 2007-2015 XK or XKR? (2006-2014 in GB)

Welcome to the Forum, JaneSchulte1959! I noted that you don't have a signature and that your Public Profile shows that you're in the USA. Please read this thread and add a signature. That'll help us to answer your questions.

It appears that you're in the wrong Forum, as the description of your key isn't for a 2007-2015 XK/XKR (X150). This is the OEM Jaguar X150 Smartkey:

What do you not understand about doing a hard reset?
Everyone who knows Jaguars knows their reputation for electrical problems. A low battery can unleash the electrical gremlins who trigger the CEL, DTCs, and idiot lights on your dashboard. How do you get rid of them? A hard reset is the first step.
Yes, you say, but you think it doesn't make sense to hold the positive (+) and negative (-) battery cables together. You don't want to make your battery explode! Neither do I.
The objective of a hard reset is to discharge (erase) the volatile memory in a variety of electronic modules, and reset them to their default factory values.
Your battery won't be damaged if you remove the negative (black ground) battery cable and touch the metal end of that cable against the positive (red) battery terminal. All that does is create a path for the positive battery terminal to go to ground.
So, what does that do? All modules are then grounded, which means that their volatile memories get erased.
Think of those modules as apps on your cellphone. Say you're using an app and your cellphone locks up and isn't responding. To fix it, you go to that app and delete the cache. You then turn your phone off and back on, and everything works again - but you have to sign back into that app because It lost your password when you deleted the cache.
That's how a hard reset works. My example is an oversimplification because some modules aren't affected by a hard reset. Nevertheless, it's the first thing to try because it's quick and easy and might fix the problems, if you're lucky.
