Default Scratched the convertible itch

To cut a boring story short - I traded in my coupe and got an XK convertible, and upsized to an XKR while I was at it (with performance active exhaust and the Portfolio Package aka 'Special Edition' in the UK/). 2013 with 59,000 miles.

I bought it from Carvana (I know, I know...), The positive from that is that I had a week to get it checked out, and I could always return it for free.

So I took it to Jaguar Nashville the day after it was delivered. If there was nothing fatally wrong with it and Carvana pays for any repairs I'd keep it, if they didn't, I'd return it and keep looking.
The Jaguar service rep came down and set next to me like a doctor coming to break bad news, armed with half a tree's worth of paper in his hand. Anyway, whilst there was a lot that needed attention, none of it, if fixed, rose to the level of 'return the car NOW'. And Carvana did agree to pay for it all after sending a 3rd party inspector out to confirm the issues, so there we go.

Now, I know I've taken a plunge with a car that had clearly not been looked after well by the previous owner (there was some good service history up to the prior owner who had the car for 3 years) as even the briefest lookover by a JLR technician would have picked up some of theses issues. Or maybe they knew of them but didn't want to take care of them. Either way, I am aware this is not a 'one old lady owner always serviced at correct intervals' kinda car, but if it doesn't work out, it doesn't and I'll move on - not a big deal.

Main reason for posting was to share what came out of the Pre Purchase Inspection report so you can ogle at current JLR service center parts and labor cost prices and maybe use as reference for parts needed for various tasks, and also to those who had never considered Carvana before - hey, I've heard horror stories like everyone else, but if they'll cover OEM parts and JLR technician work up to at least $12k on a jag you buy from there to bring it up to speed, don't dismiss it out of hand.

Hey, it's ten years old. Time to do those things anyway. Now you have a nearly new 2013!
That seems like a great deal to me!

Yeah, that's how I'm looking at it. When he showed me the list of items required it was like a greatest hits collection of 'things to do on the XK circa 60k miles', so why not.

And the first time I put the top down and went for a drive I knew I'd made the right choice.

And as a clarification, I did pay a $350 deductible towards the cost as I wanted the work done at a JLR service center instead of the 'in-network' shops that Silver Rock (Carvana warranty company) wants you to use. Money well spent as SR would probably have asked a local Firestone's teenage wrench monkeys to have a go at it. The Jag shop were good about it, they made sure they had a tech with familiarity with these cars on hand to do the work.

Wow. They foot the $12k bill, nice. Nothing comes for free, so you maybe you overpaid to start with? But you were satisfied with the price to pull the trigger, so it’s water under the bridge, and you’re a happy camper. Enjoy the ride, and yeah, get the remote top controller! Best mod you’ll make to your car.

Never heard about a carvana kind of thing in EU but it appears interesting.
You know have a great looking car almost as new.

But, To have the full info, and understand if that's a "bang for the buck", how much did you finally pay for it?
I mean, by the end after the work was done.

Thanks.

It already had it! I was leafing through the folder in the glovebox and found the documentation for it. Tested it and it works.

Confused the service center - they told me there may be a problem with the top as it appeared to open on it's own when they went to bring the car round front. I explained the aftermarket mod and that the kid must have been trigger happy with the smart key when approaching the car.

It was on my list of things to get, so super happy that it was already installed.

I paid $31,000. I don't think that's too extravagant. I was baking into it that there were going to be repairs needed and I wasn't going to be paying for them (unless very minor).

EDIT - that was the sale price, I traded my 2014 XK in, so net spend was a lot less.

WoW That's a bargain to a European!
Over here you can't get such mileage and year model for less than 55000$

You should feel really happy. She's beautifull.

Just to add - Carvana/Silver Rock are also covering the purchase of 2 new OEM Orona front wheels at $1700 each as the inspection report noted the originals were bent. They were sent to a wheel repair shop who stated they were irreparable due to the location of the bend. They also coughed up money towards the cost of refinishing all 4 wheels in the original polished alloy finish (last owner had them painted black). I owe the service rep at Jaguar Nashville a drink or two, he's worked wonders on that.

Just, wow!
To be clear. Carvana sold you a car for 31k and then paid a service center over 14k to correct everything on the repair report?
just noticed that the alignment labor was charged at much lower rate, why?
Finally, a relative of mine had a car brought in to purchase (carvana in austin tx) it needed brake rotors. They had their service center check them and stated they were fine. The rotors were below the accepted thickness but the car did still stop. Carvana would not budge on having Jag/Austin repair the brakes. The car was not purchased.
Such a different story you tell.

Yes.

Well, not EVERYTHING, as the report had a couple of recommended maintenance items on it (brake fluid flush for example) that they would not cover, but they covered everything mechanical/covered by the 90 day warranty you get. It was never expected they would cover normal recommended maintenance.

Carvana will generally do everything to not have you return the vehicle. The 7 day return window gives you a lot of leverage whilst you're still in it. I was more surprised that they agreed to extend that 7 days to 14 days to allow Silver Rock time to approve or deny the warranty claim. I made it clear that I would return the car if the warranty claim was denied, or if I did not know the answer to the claim decision before the return window closed (hence asking for an extension that they granted).

Not sure why the alignment labor rate was lower. Maybe that's considered a lower grade technical task than others. As I was only paying the $350 deductible towards the work, I wasn't too fussed about those details.

I'm sure others have had frustrating experiences purchasing from Carvana, I can only relay my - so far - positive one. I've also read horror stories: borderline deathtrap cars that customers returned as there was critical damage, only to find Carvana listing it again immediately for someone else to buy (and I assume, hopefully someone not so diligent in getting it inspected...), stolen cars etc.

I’m a newcomer and curious. Is that typical service to expect on a 60,000 mile XK?

I'd say control arms, and elements of the cooling system, such as water pump and some coolant hoses are common items that come up around this mileage if not before, but each case is different.

The costs listed here are extreme of course as these are OEM parts purchased through, and installed by a JLR service center. Going to an indy will bring the prices down, and DIY endeavours more so. I'm taking advantage of a warranty here.
