Regarding the laptop, use a fresh install of windows 7 - think you want 32 bit, not 64. Once you load the software do this:

Regarding Dongles, read the attached. The DA Dongle gets good reviews

I think I will be happy with the sneaky pay-not-much version, and don't care about access to new live files.

Howdy. You need a bit more than the software. I would get the software from someone on the forum - look here:

The British diagnostic type set-up is what I would want, is there a better place to get it after seeing people with problems with British Diagnostics?

I would avoid BD and go with DA dongle as the guys on this forum have used it with great success and no issues.
As for getting the software, reach out (PM) Motorcarman or GGG and they will give you a link to download. Don't download from the inter web when you have trusted guys on this forum who have the software. I'd send you mine but it was customized for my 07 and I don't know all of the modified files or whether they would impact your 08

You don't need any version newer than 123 for your 2008. Newer versions are for newer vehicles. All the updates (TSB's etc) will have been made for your model year with that version. Actually you can probably get by with version 118.

160 is way less janky than the early versions. easier to download and install and runs on windows 10.

Thx xalty. I have 118 and it is in fact SDD but also includes IDS, which I prefer personally. The OP has windows 7 and I'll defer to you the jankiness compared to earlier versions

Can't speak for others, but I've been using V130 from BD for 8 months without any problems (except the learning curve).
Runs on a BD-configured VM XP machine resident on a Win 10 PC. Installed easily if instructions followed exactly.
The BD supplied dongle, which I assume is a knockoff, runs fine.
Yes, the JLR SDD program is primitive as a cave painting, but it runs as it claims to.
I use "Car Scanner Pro" connecting my Samsung S9 Droid via Bluetooth to a typical Elm 327 adapter. This lets me use the "Car Scanner Pro" Data Recording tool, which is light years ahead of the crappy one on SDD. Other Play store apps run through the Elm.
And, yes, BD support is nonexistent. So, you should be comfortable with PC's and the use of a Virtual Machine.
But it runs, diagnoses and gives me the JLR codes that align to the Shop Manual. Also runs the resident tools, like Seat Calibration, Aux port enablement and so on.

Hey Panthera.....Would you trust your BD clone to clear transmission adaptions? I've just blown over 500 for filter, LG6 fluid and ZF solenoids from CTSC (trying to fix a very random and intermittent P0738)...I already have the BD Mongoose clone and the VM XP V130...it seems ok, but various posts around here seem to equate the clone to a game of Russian Roulette with 5 in the cylinder rather than 1....

Some routines (like the adaptation clear) are very quick; some very long, hence the need for DC power. You should get the relearning procedure for the Jag ZF and execute it when the adaptations are cleared. OTOH, though you can just start driving after clearing, you should do the relearning procedure. Realistically, you don't have to dance through all the relearning procedure. I do as much as I can without getting run over here in SoFla traffic.
There are two excellent explanations for ZF adaptation issues, as well as a discussion of the relearning procedure. Further, an example (Audi, in this case) of ZF fill pressures as a diagnostic tool are discussed. Very educational on how the ZF adaptation process actually works. If anyone has the Jaguar fill pressure ranges from the X150 base, please post them.

Since it's a fairly expensive program and the newer versions require a paid subscription, about the only way is to get an older copy from someone who already has it, or check the Caribbean Seas for an outlaw captain and crew.

Hi
Don't know if this helps but I bought this last week to help a customer who's car had issues after battery was disconnected.
Could not do anything with it via Autel or Snap-On.
This fixed the problem and the seller was incredibly helpful. Put it on an old Windows 7 laptop quite easily unlike a lot of cheap diagnostic software I've bought in the past.

Before anyone asks I'm nothing to do with this guy, I joined the forum last week looking for a solution to my customers issue.
