Default Seatback won't go forward x2

First, no, I haven't had the opportunity to reset battery etc. :-)

I have seats with many functions, 5 buttons I believe and 3xmemory. Per side. For two trips now the seatback can't go forward. All other functions seem to work. And strangely, to me at least, it's exactly the same on the passenger side. So I'm reclining more and more, only using the memory helps but seems erratic also.

Strange that one of maybe 20 functions don't work, and on both seats. Could it be a "don't get strangled in the seatbelt"-nanny thing? My seat belt, whether it's on or off, seems to be read correct by the car.

Thanks

Seat module either needs a reflash or replacement. Same thing on my son's 2007; seat bottom works in all directions, back won't move at all. I hooked it up to SDD to reflash, got a MODULE FAILURE indication.

NQ, download the electrical guide for your model and you'll see that the seat electrics are duplicated for each side. So having the seat backs fail identically is a bit weird. Only commonality I can see is the central junction box. On my 07 xk na, there are three distinct fuses for each side in the CJB, one logic and two motors. So nothing jumps out that would cause both sides to fail. Seats are section 12 in the guide.

With SDD you can recalibrate the seats, meaning the seat module relearns the various limits of operation. Maybe SDD on both sides?

Did some testing today
  • -Battery disconnected, cables shorted, battery charged
  • ·Checked the 4 15 amp fuses in 28-32, and thhe 2 5 amp fuses in 9 and 18
  • ·My iCarsoft SDD can get me Fault codes, I don’t think it can flash anything. Initally it read “Local interconnection network bus circuit 1” on the seat. Cleared it, and saw various fault codes on the 2 seats and 2 door button modules. Right now, no fault codes on seats and door modules
End result, no remedy, I had once when trying to get seat back forward a split second electric motor noise, as if it tried. But as before, but now including that passenger seat (right) can’t move whole seat anymore (update, now it can)

So it seems very erratic, so I’m thinking flashing (not sure how) or new module(s)? Most strange is the fact that it's both seats, what's the common denominator?

Solved, but still a bit mysterious. Here's how...

I called the nearby Jaguar dealer, know them a bit, I'm in the local chapter of Jaguar Club of Denmark. He said he had that issue some years ago, but never on both seats at the same time, and since all modules are double, for each seat, that sounded strange. But I was welcome to come by, so they could put the tester on.
So I drove there, he put the tester on, nothing about the seats, but fault codes in 20(!) other modules. Probably because of my battery going flat this winter. He tried a few things, that required a few restarts, and then it wouldn't start. They put a charger on, no start. So things had gone from bad to worse I thought...
Since my battery was a only 90Ah from a local shop instead of proper 100Ah (bought the 90Ah when I couldn't start it 1 day before my vacation 2 years ago) and it had been flat this winter and it could be the reason for the 20 faults, and that if we were to diagnose the seats we
needed full power, I bought a new 100Ah Bosch battery. Now it started fine...

They had no real idea what to do next. I then, based on Panthera999s comment above, asked if they could reset/realign/relearn the seats with their equipment? So they pulled out another gizmo and started doing that. Starting with the passenger seat, yes it could now move 1mm forward. Then 2mm. Then 5 mm. It had been both an electronic issue, but also maybe a result of seatbacks never being "exercised", only I drive this car, only the wife sits in the passenger seat. He then did the same with the driver's seat, had to be exercised as well, now works fine.

So all is good. Battery problem, stuck motors, all would go away if I drove the car every day, there's a lesson there... ;-)

Good news. I had the frozen seat thing happen to me when the car was first shipped fully awake for a week until the battery was thoroughly flat. It seems to be related to a flat battery, and happens randomly even then. I fixed it with SDD's seat recalibrate routine, which is what your dealer used, I'm sure. Searches out the motor stops so the module knows where they are.

Similar to how the window stops are tested when you reset them after disconnecting the battery. Difference is that you don't need SDD for the windows (though there's a routine for it), and you can do it with the window buttons.

Anyway, for all those who experience the seat issue: happens randomly, related to very low battery voltage, needs SDD recalibrate routine (and a well-charged battery around 12.5vdc ) to fix.

NQ, thanks (!) for stopping back with the fix. Letting everyone know makes a big difference to others who face the problem.

PS: Current diagnostic tools often have Jag service functions to test and recalibrate major systems. For example, my Autel has a test and recalibrate routine for the suspension and headlights, among others. They don't invest in developing the "almost never a problem" ones that SDD has, like the seat calibrate. So unless you've used SDD you won't know it exists.
