Default Sequence to re-program XKR after new battery install

I have seen the following posted by Ngarara.

Is there a complete sequence that someone can post to re-program an XKR "AFTER" installing a new battery?

Here's what I have, but think there is more to it.

  • Connect the battery cables and tighten to 5 Nm. Ground cable must be connected last
  • Install the battery cover and close the luggage compartment lid.
  • Start the engine and allow to idle until the engine reaches normal operating temperature.
  • Switch the engine off.
  • Restart the engine and allow to idle for approximately two minutes (this will allow the ECM to learn the idle values).
  • Apply and hold the brake pedal, select drive and allow the engine to idle for a further two minutes.
  • Drive the vehicle for approximately five miles/eight kilometers of varied driving to enable the ECM to complete its learning strategy.
  • Reset the audio unit and climate control assembly to your settings.
  • Reset the door window motors.

That lot is verbatim from the workshop manual. If there's more to be done, they don't document it. The only other thing I've seen is that the electronic parking brake needs to be reset, but the car apparently asks you to do it (from 2011 handbook):

If the battery has been discharged or disconnected, the message APPLY FOOT AND PARK BRAKE will be displayed when the ignition is next switched on. Depress the foot brake and apply the parking brake. This is required to reset the parking brake system. The parking brake will now function correctly.

When mine were acting up it ended up being a low battery. Auto up worked on one and not the other.

To reset the windows:
  • Start the engine
  • Open the windows
  • Fully close the driver's window, then release the switch.
  • Again pull the switch to close the window and just hold for two seconds.
  • Open the driver's window fully and release the switch.
  • Again press the switch to open the window and just hold for two seconds.
  • Fully close the passenger's window, then release the switch.
  • Again pull the switch to close the window and just hold for two seconds.
  • Open the passenger's window fully and release the switch.
  • Again press the switch to open the window and just hold for two seconds.

Note also on convertibles that if the top pauses for several seconds when raising or lowering, it usually means the windows are not reset.

Default Electrics went nuts

I had a similar experience last year with my '97 XK8 convertible. upon investigation, i found my battery positive cable felt "warm" not hot, but very definately warm to the touch. The car had not been run at all that day. I replaced both battery cables and have had no further issues as of yet. unfortunately did not find corrosion on cables but something caused it to heat up.

Any idea if pulling EMS 10A fuse # 12 in the engine compartment will reset the ECM?

The wiring diagrams show several fuses related to the ECM in the 4.2. In the engine-bay fusebox, Fuse 2 (10A), Fuse 3 (5A) and Fuse 12 (10A) all seem to provide power feeds to the ECM. 2 is "B+ IGN_SUPPLY_2", 3 is "B+ BATTERY", 12 is "B+ IGN_SUPPLY_1" - you may have to yoink all three.

The effect should be the same as disconnecting the battery, i.e. the ECM has to re-learn the idle points and some other car-specifc parameters. That's what all that starting, idling & driving is about in the battery reconnect procedure
