Default service required?

Message just started coming up when starting car SERVICE REQUIRED. 2010 xk had oil changed 11 months ago, has 4k miles on oil. Is this service message for an oil change or possibly other service and how do I find out? was planning on having INDY change oil soon, don't want to spend half a day taking it to dealer. thanks

Here is the explanation of how the SERVICE INTERVAL INDICATOR operates and the reset procedure:

It's a 'nag' message and not a sophisticated monitoring system indicating a fault.

Ok , I have tried doing this set of instructions at least a dozen times in past 2 days and nothing happens. Also the message service required in xxxx miles was never displayed prior to service required message coming up. Don't know if that has anything to do with it. Suggestions? thanks again

I believe it works on time as well as distance, since the car is supposed to be serviced every 12 months or xx miles. You get the "SERVICE REQUIRED IN xxx MILES" if you're close to the distance limit - if 12 months is coming up, you just get "SERVICE REQUIRED". That's what I got about a week before my 12-month service interval was up.

The problem is the car got serviced just before I put it in the garage for the winter. I have use it for 3 weeks only since. I guess the mechanic didn't reset the program?

On the 2010 XKR coupe I just picked up last night, same service message. Took it to my indie mechanic, he reset in less than a minute and it's gone. You don't need the dealer to do it.

Dealers won't reset it without doing a service - I had a big argument with my local service centre when they removed the battery to give it a deep charge and the service message came up as soon as they put the battery back. I'd just bought the car and it had been serviced only 2 weeks earlier - they refused to reset the service interval until I got the dealer that sold me the car to send them proof of service!

You have 3 seconds, that's the trick. The split second you press starter, immediately press trip indicator and rear fog button. I mean immediately!!

okay, do you keep the rear fog lamp pressed while you press the start button then let it go and repress it at the same time you press the button in the turn signal stalk which is the computer trip set button?

Does this procedure work on a 2009 XK? I've tried at least 25 times with no luck! And I'm quick like a ninga!

That procedure was originally documented for the XF, so it's possible that it only works on later XKs. Rahtok and scm said it worked on their 2010s, HouTexJag said it worked on his 2013. Brutal (certified tech) said it should work on all XKs.
