Service Required Message

edited: had to read the literature you posted a few times for it to sink in, as to what it meant... so it's not just mileage but "driving style and conditions" that determine oil change interval. So I am guessing my spirited driving has shortened the cycle this go round...

From my 2015MY XK Owner's Handbook:
My XK is due the next service in 27 Days and has covered 4858 miles since the last one. The Service Interval Indicator is NOT displayed in the Message Centre.
One reason for a false countdown being displayed would be if it was not reset at the last service.

Its not based solely on mileage or time, that would be same as a sticker reminding you when to change the oil.
Its based on an algorithm. (start-stop vs hyw is one I am aware) the computer takes all that into consideration.
Another one is air temperature.
But most people fall under the simple rule of x-miles/x-time.
Some manufacturers have abandoned these algos and others claim to be more clever.

My XK light came on after about 50 weeks since the last reset! (about 4000 miles) Pretty much perfect timing

SSM71850 infers that the procedure has changed from the 2014MY on all models (XK X150 14MY from VIN B52041).
This is the process for the 2014 on F-Type, XJ and XF petrol models so see if it works on yours and report back:
1. Set the ignition to the ON position.
2. Open the hood.
3. Open the drivers door.
NOTE: A service resetting message will appear on the instrument cluster.
4.Fully depress both the accelerator and brake pedals and hold for 10 seconds.
5. Set the ignition to the OFF position.
6. Set the ignition to the ON position and check the message has been cleared.
7. If the message remains, repeat the process.

The reset procedure is as follows:
1. Press and hold the rear fog lamp switch (before the ignition is on).
2. Press the start button without applying the foot brake (do not start the engine)
3. Release the rear fog lamp switch (1sec)
4. Press and hold the trip computer cycle switch (within 1sec).
5. Press and hold the rear fog lamp switch. (within 1sec)
6. Continue to hold the trip computer and rear fog lamp switches.
7. The message center should display "resetting service mode" and then "service mode reset"
8. Release the trip computer and the fog lamp switches and turn the ignition off.
Now, when you do this, it must be in a nice, even pace to work well. Pretty much on a one-second cadence. Also, it is helpful to practice these steps a few times until a good rhythm is achieved, then do it for real. Seriously.

Thank you for for the help, Cee Jay!

Resurrecting this thread because the service required indicator showed back up last night and again this morning. Car has been sitting for about a week and half since last driven. It has been 326 miles since oil change and resetting the indicator. Does anyone know why this would pop up in such a short distance. checked oil level and it is where it should be, battery is on ctek maintainer and while driving to work today had a steady 13.2-13.5 voltage reading on fusion app. Just to be clear the service required displays right at start up and then goes away within a few seconds.

because theres a bulletin about service reminder not showing up and reflashing the instrument pack. But also read that as reminders that reset and come back on in a couple days (customers claim we didnt reset, we do and reminder off but comes back on )
