It is not difficult. First unscrew the shift knob- it is held firm by a bit of locktite so it requires a bit of force but it will release. Now, with the shifter in N, *gently* pry up under the side edges of the wood finisher, perhaps starting at the forward part. For this procedure a set of plastic trim removal tools is advisable.
The wood finisher is simply held in by several clips on each side. Once these are freed the finisher together with the shift quadrant surround will lift straight off. The shift quadrant surround is then easily removed from the wood piece - it is held by a spring clip.

If the shifter in in N you shouldn't need to unscrew the gear knob. I have never had to on my '07 XKR anyway.

I normally remove the trim off by sliding back the ashtray lid and using a trim removal tool gently prise up at the rear corner in the ashtray. This should then pop up giving easy leverage to remove the trim.

Don't forget to unclip the start and ASL button connectors too.
