shorty antenna

I went to a local audio shop and they told me the chances are very slim of finding something that will work on this car because of its angled location (meaning, not coming straight up out of the back end, such as on the older sedans). I have to remember to turn off the audio before driving into my building garage or risk damaging it...
I tried disconnecting the power entirely via pulling the fuse, but it severely affected the FM and satellite radio reception. The only thing I haven't tried is pulling the plug just after the antenna starts to go up, stopping it at a shorter height. But that won't make the antenna look any less ugly. lol

I'm taking my car to a local car audio shop tomorrow. They said there are a couple of antennas that might work ... I will update
UPDATE 28 January:
Found two local car audio shops who can do the install based on the photos and info from the Forum. Funny, one shop quoted me less than $200 for parts/installation, while the other shop quoted between $300-$500 for the exact same thing! I guess that's the difference between customer service and GREED. The install will happen next Saturday. I'll post pics.

Got the shorty antenna installed yesterday at Safe N Sound in Manassas, Va. for less than $125.00. They said the only complication was the bracket, which had to be custom made, so let that be a warning should you decide to get the work done. The antenna is nothing more than a universal antenna, which cost about $29.

Hi All,
I have had mine out twice now to repair the mast. The first time it was already bent when I bought the car and I replaced it. Second time, I wasn't paying attention and bent it coming out of the garage. All this in a month. This power antenna mounts straight and looks just like those I have installed on other cars. I bought one off ebay for my new yorker for $19 and it looks just like it. One of those shorty antennas looks like it will work just fine but like Cat says, the mount will need some work.
Dag, just unplug the antenna while it is down as others have done and you won't have any problem.

Does anyone know if those universal masts actually fit and look okay?
My mast had bent, now it makes a horrible sound like the drive cable is stripped and the drive gear is slipping. This happens at the top when going up and at the bottom going down
I dont mind the antenna (when it works that is) although a shorter one would be a plus

If you are inclined to repair your antenna, take a look at the XK8 FAQ thread for "Replacement & Repair" in the XK8 & XKR 1997-newer "Antenna" section.
If you're inclined to retain the stock antenna, but prefer to control it's up/dn movement (i.e., have it up only when listening to the radio), take a look at the excellent directions for a remote up/down switch provided in the same section as, "Disconnecting/Remote Switch install." There's also an excellent how-to video on YouTube.
