Sam, that exact dealer has some cars I'm interested in on eBay and I'd be thrilled if you could post your buying experience on here when it's concluded, if you can find the time.

Congrats on a sweet car!

Awesome job tracking that one down. That is a Miami/Fort Lauderdale dealer, correct? If it's the one I'm thinking of it's been up for sale for at least 4-5 months now. I always liked the look of it as well, and thought it was a well priced car. I'm interested to hear what it really is like.

Let me know which cars you're interested in and I'll try to give them a glance. I'm not going to have much time, but if you're interested in the dealer's Maseratis and Bentleys, the least I could do is test drive them for you.

Congrats on a sweet car!
Thanks! I hope it checks out! I bought a one-way ticket to Fort Lauderdale, so I'm going to be pissed if I have to buy a ticket home.

The coupes look so much sexier. The vert would be nice, but I think I've outgrown that phase. Plus I couldn't pass up this deal. I was basically looking for an XKR coupe, or an XK convertible. An XKR convertible would have been nice, but I'll settle for the coupe

I've seen it on cars dot com for several weeks, but it was listed as an XK, not an XKR, so I pretty much ignored it. I thought it was an overpriced XK. Yesterday I went directly to their website and saw that it was listed as an "XK XKR". It had the nostrils on the hood, so I ran the VIN and saw that it's an actual XKR. I called the dealer. The dude seems like a one-man show, but he has a lot of cars. I asked him a few questions, and it was obvious he had other stuff to do. He's busy selling Maseratis and Bentleys. It almost seemed like the XKR was small potatoes to him. But I asked him if their was wiggle room in the price. He said the price is the price. I asked if he charged a dealer fee or doc fee or any other bullshit fees. He said "the price is the price. Give me $20K and drive away with the car." (I'm paraphrasing).

So I told him I was going to book a flight. He said if I would text him a pic of the itinerary he would hold the car and pick me up at the airport.

So tomorrow I'm picking up a cashiers check and a wad of cash, hopping a plane, and (hopefully) driving home in a badass XKR.

Good luck with the new car Sam! Let us know how it goes. I have changed directions a bit and am probably going to gamble more than I should on a car.... Details to be forthcoming.

I'm back at the airport. I have one of those Bluetooth OBD dongles and the Torque app on my phone. Yesterday I was assured that the check engine light wasn't on and the codes had not been cleared. I hooked up Torque and it showed the codes were cleared 0.6 miles ago. The emissions were "not ready" because the codes had been cleared. Despite that, it was already registering a U0100 code. That has something to do with the ECM, so I told them to drive me back to the airport. I had to shell out $32I for a return ticket

Thank you for this. I was looking at DB9s and definitely don't want shenanigans as time off is precious.

You'll get a car soon though, keep us posted!

Shady is right.
My daughter REALLY wanted to get a VW bug about ten years ago and found one for cheap. I went with her to see it and immediately found the same thing; codes cleared less than a mile prior and THREE in memory, can't remember which ones though.
Daughter STILL wanted it, said she could find someone to register it anyway. I said NO and made her leave without even driving it.
Sellers SUCK sometimes. This one was local though, so no wasted time or airfare.
Sorry, Sam.

That seller is in BIG TROUBLE with you-know-who upstairs!

P.S. If you want to recover all of your out-of-pocket travel expenses, I think you have a pretty good chance if you want to go through the trouble of suing the seller yourself (pro se, without a lawyer) in Small Claims Court (or the equivalent) in the seller's jurisdiction. You incurred those travel expenses because you relied on the seller's representations, which turned out to be blatant lies. That's called fraud in the inducement, and you never would have made the trip if he told you the truth. If you decide that it's not worth your time and effort to do so, you can file a complaint against the seller with his local Better Business Bureau.

I know about turning the other cheek, but why let a crook off the hook without any consequences? All that'll do is encourage him to continue in his evil ways.

Consider this: write him a letter by Certified Mail, Return Receipt, and explain that you thought about suing him for fraud in the inducement and notifying the BBB, but prefer that he atone for his sins by making a $xxx (amount of your travel expenses) donation in to your church within 10 days, and your congregation will pray for his soul.

Well that sucks.
Used car dealers, you gotta lov... loath them.
Tell them to take it to a Jag dealer and get it fixed, knock a grand off the price to cover your wasted time and plane tickets, and then you might take it.
... Like that's gonna happen...
Oh well, better luck next time. There's good ones out there.

Stuart, just toying with the inner lawyer in you.
Logically, would that not be fraud, extortion and malice. You are leveraging influence that you may not have, then using said influence with ultimate authority to organize group campaign to extract vengeance; because the high priest was denied a luxury car?

The dealer could argue it was God's will. And why we must choose either the courtroom upstairs or the one down here.

I would look for one without stories and excuses. If you have to have it shipped, it's a heck lot cheaper than dealing with issues. Go for the pampered nice one; an XKR deserves it.

Are you back on the "Bank Bandit" getaway car yet? It makes for the best story line.

I like this idea. My sister is a lawyer IN FLORIDA. I'll ask her about it. Maybe she can just send the dealer a certified letter demanding reimbursement for my travel expenses.

Actually... My wife and I are going to see that one tomorrow. It's four hours from here. I'm 100% certain I won't be driving it home tomorrow, but I definitely want to check it out. It would be totally cool to own a Jag that was previously owned by a bank robber. It sounds like it has a LOT of issues. As people know, I'm not afraid to work on a car. But This one might require a little too much work. And the "power of attorney" thing is a little scary. I could end up losing all of my money if the person whose name is on the title claims the seller didn't have the right to sell it. But my sister is a lawyer. Hopefully she can give me some good advice.

I will say... that car was GORGEOUS! The exterior was flawless and the interior only had a couple of minor blemishes. The lines on the X150 coupes are downright sensual. I was about to cry when I discovered the potential mechanical issues.
