Default Should I Powdercoat My Wheels?

Considering having my wheels done in satin or matte center with gloss black lip and bright rivets. What do you think?

I would go from this:

to this:

No opinion on the wheels, but that is a crazy beautiful finish on that car. Is that ebony?

Photo of the after did not show up.....

But, I really like the wheels as seen in the first 3 photos.

What are they and what are they called?

Also can't see the "after" picture. Apologies if this seems like stating the obvious but if you do get them powder coated then make sure they mask off the mating faces or remove any powder coat from them afterwards. I had a set of wheels on another car done "on the cheap" so to speak, ended up having trouble getting the wheels off the car as the powder stuck the wheels to the hubs.

Powder on the mating faces can also throw your wheel alignment out. Make sure the wheels are balanced with no powdercoat on the mating faces also. After I had the powder removed to allow the wheels to be aligned properly they were slightly out of balance and caused some vibration through the steering.

Apologies again if this is stating the obvious, just nobody told me about it before I got mine done and it was a bit of a hassle getting it sorted out!

I thought you were removing them and selling the car.

My preference is for wheels to match other trim pieces (windows, bumper scoops, etc.). If the spokes were black, they wouldn't stand out and their visual impact would be lessened.

The pictured GTR was modded to look sinister and more boy-racer, so the black spokes complete that look. Not my taste.

At the opposite end of the visual spectrum is your XKR, a gentleman's GT. It looks high class and sophisticated with the Cor Cipher wheels, as if they were OEM. I wouldn't change that look. But if you prefer the bad boy-racer look, then consider trading it for an XKR-S GT. Just my opinion.

You might want to consider adding LEDs to outline your headlights, similar to the latest models. Has anyone on the forum done that yet? Recommendations?

I usually prefer black wheels but on your car I would leave them alone. It matches well with your trim pieces and gives the car a nice contrast.

Thanks for the feedback. I was thinking that the XK IS a gentleman's GT and wanted to give it an edge. I do agree about the trim. The rear Jag is now black and if I did blaxk wheels I would most certainly black out the windown trim too.

Bruce,

I forgot to respond to you. I was going to sell it. But every time I drive something else such as this last Lotus Esprit V8 I get back in my car and remember why I bought it. It's just such a stinking compete car. The only other cars that rival or surpass it's full package - Power, Rarity, Presence, Sound, Power, Reliability, Luxury, Handling etc would be SLS, 911 Turbo, Vantage V12, R8 V10, McLaren, NSX (supercharged) etc. All are way more $ but the 997TT which does not have the presence or rareness of our car but is a good used buy. And I've had 3 NSX's to date...

I would have to increase the budget. And have tons of house projects going on so not interested in going well over $100k

I was not a fan of the blacked out wheels on mine up until I blacked out the trim pieces. Then it made a big difference. The trim and the wheels balance each other out, and to do one without the other looked funny to me. I agree with previous post that it looks more Boy Racer and doesn't have that sophisticated bling to it, but my wife says it looks young and modern. So that's that. Black it is.

I agree they should balance each other. I would either do the centers only and leave the lips to match the trim or do all black and also do trim. I'm thinking a dark gray center to make brakes pop but not too black.

I feel the same way about the XKR, and it looks outstanding as a convertible which a lot of others just don't do well at all. I have a feeling my next toy will replace a couple of the others, and the XKR will stay. It's a wife-friendly car, she's just got comfortable driving it the odd time, and there's a good chance she won't like what I buy next

Bruce
