Default Slow 2008 XK

Well it had to happen, I have spent my life with high speed vehicles. Recently I concluded that in my later years with failing eyesight and reaction time that the 300hp XK in S mode was enough for me.

I had a wakeup call yesterday.

A longtime friend showed up with his velocity modified XE 3.0 SC. He has all of Velocityap’s software and crank pulley upgrades, this included the E85 tune. (535HP)

We went for one of my hill country drives, me behind the wheel. Once I became accustomed to the power delivery my adrenalin began rushing again (I’m still alive and feel great). I should mention that he has a set of adjustable coil overs installed.

He set it to S mode, R mode and traction control off…woohoo!

The car pulled in a manner that put a smile on my face, I only took it up to 140 several times but on the two lane country roads it was fast enough. It handles great, little body roll, could keep a line in and out of turns, sharp, gradual, increasing radius, decreasing radius, even bumpy turns. At speed the back end would gradually step out and burn up a little of his newly installed Michelin Sport 4Ss

Given the pull in 3rd and 4th to7k I have little doubt it would be capable of 165-175 if enough road was available. It would almost leap forward until 110mph then it very strongly kept pulling. Power started to decline @ 6500.

I slept better last night reliving many of the curves and pulls I had made during the drive. I guess the little adrenalin rushes I got helped me with the sleep.

So, no 300 HP isn’t going to work for me…sure hope I can finish up several projects and be in a position to obtain a 2010 or later xkr soon.

Thanks for reading.

😆 tough life driving a slow car! 😆
that being said we can add 30-40 hp plus 50lb of torque to your slow 300hp car with just a reflash of the ECU

and if just a reflash was just @ $2~3 hundred it might happen, since that is just what I would be willing to gamble.

If you've the budget, the 5.0 litre's capable of more than double the power of your XK, and I don't just mean the budget for modifications, I also mean money for maintenance and parts replacements...

Not certain if they're referring to a compatibility issue with parts materials and ethanol or if it's the issue with the specific gravity of E85 which requires more powerful fuel pumps and larger fuel injectors, standard pumps can burn out and not deliver adequate supply to the injectors and the standard injectors may not be able to spray E85 due to its density.

Syphon the E85 out and fill with what its meant to run on. Otherwise you will be going from 300hp to 0hp. The 4.2 is a modest V8, and is more than adequate for the civilized end user. Racing is not what the XK was made for, which is why racing XKR’s are heavily modified. The XK is a chariot which carries you at speed and in style. So if you want more hp, get a tune. Im looking into it myself. But the XK is not exactly a canyon carver or a hotrod. Its a classy motor. The XKR is where things get better in regards to power and grunt.

The OP was referring to a tuned XE NOT XK....however without an E85 fuel system, the stock one's not strong enough to run denser liquids.

Thanks cj, passed the e85 info on to my friend.
as to 5.0 vs 4.2, when I'm ready to move up to xkr I will way the cost benefit. I know that from reading I would feel more secure with a mildly tuned 4.2 (xkr) and 450hp would work just fine but we will see.
