As I tire of having to pull the spare out to check and adjust inflation I decided to buy an extender, I actually bought it the last time I checked my spare earlier this year. Figured the next time I checked it I would add this adapter. That time was today, seems spare went down by around 20 psi (from 60 to 40). Now I can easily check it more frequently.

Both my cars have upside down mounts for the spare, therefore I bought the two pack.

 

Those are great things to have. You can use them all over the place if you have several vehicles.

 

I've had the same temporary spares on three Jaguars and a Bentley. Two have stored 'upside down' like that and it is a chore to take them out for a pressure check. Good idea to fit the extension.

All the temporary spares had a recommended pressure of 60 psi and all have lost up to 10 psi if left unattended between services. I check my tyre pressures (even with TPMS!), remove stones trapped in the treads and inspect for cuts monthly. The temporary spare usually needs 2-3 psi to bring it up to recommended even after such a short interval.

CHECK YOUR SPARE - the time to find it needs air is not on a cold, wet night.

LOL, this is what happened to me the only time I have used the spare. Well minus the cold. It was at wet and dark though.

You know, I noticed that and discounted. I am not sure that white stuff hasn't been there the whole time. The spare is quite sound and virtually new, does have 20 or so miles on it from usage several years ago. Regardless, I am not one of those **** people that will clean and dress the spare so it will look like that for all days I own the car.

 

That's me told.

I clean mine only because if I need to use it, I'm not likely to be dressed for vehicle maintenance. Same reason I also carry a pair of work gloves next to the spare wheel and a large black plastic bag to hold the dirty wheel that comes off.

Ha, too funny. I am pretty good and removing and installing tire without getting too dirty. In my previous BMW there was no place for a spare as they were run flats. Quite a few of us bought a spare for long road trips, problem is there is no place to fit the super wide rear tire in the trunk so it would have to go in the back seat. I bought one of these to carry the spare and any tire it replaced. Not this exact one but something similar. Handy as they have a carry handle. Keep that nasty brake dust off the upholestry.

 

Love this idea. I was looking in the "trunk" today and reminded myself to pull the donut and check the pressure...someday. This is a lot better than that awcrap moment in the rain.

And BMW's insistence on runflats spawned a business for donut spares kits to toss in the trunk. Probably about $150 or so, including carrying case, tools, jack and inflator. Few wanted a fullsize spare, but fewer wanted those damn runflats.

 

Only “those with an anus” clean all aspects of the car??
If I were to have a modern BMW, I’d need to place spare tires in the passenger seats??

Add a compact tire air compressor/ bottle of slime and you will have my kit. If I can fill it up enough with slime/air without changing the tire on the side of a highway, thats my plan. Also......make sure your lug nut security key is present! My 'new to me' jag was missing it. $42 bucks from Jag and im less schizoid now. Today is my first extended XK trip...thanks for the spare tire reminder.

 

If you add slime to your tire, no tire shop will repair the tire. They will only replace it. Now let's say you have half your tread left. You'll need a tire for the other side too. Call around. I did. None of the shops around here will repair a tire with slime. I inquired because my wife's Cadillac doesn't have a spare so I have a compressor and a DIY puncture repair kit in her car.

 

Interesting. I wonder why as part of a proper patch is to ground off a fine layer of the inside tire, apply the glue and patch. I believe you but it sounds Tire shop BS to get you to buy another tire. "Can a Slime treated tire be professionally repaired? Yes. As long as the puncture is in the repairable area of the tire and the tire is in good condition, it can be professionally repaired with a U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association approved patch/plug at your earliest convenience."

Extensions arrived yesterday, waiting for spring to arrive to install.

 

Hate to be a bit of a buzzkill. I rec'd mine and installed one on the Jag, which worked out ok. Then I installed the second one on the Mrs.' car. The blasted thing leaked badly where the fitting attaches to the hose, rendering it less than useless. I suppose I could try to crimp it tight or something, but access to her doughnut spare is easier than in the Jag, so I'm not going to mess with it. Hopefully the fitting on the first one doesn't leak too, but I'll have to monitor it over the next few days. I think this falls under 'you get what you pay for'. For $7 or whatever it was, worth the gamble if it doesn't leak.

Two months have passed, checked the pressure last night and it is rock solid stable. Happy with this convenience feature, it is the little things that give pleasure! Hopefully no one else got a dud extender like WVChris unfortunately received.
