i have finally found a solution to the sticky, gummy steering wheel and console buttons.
i realize that not all owners experience this issue as it seems to be prevalent
in warmer climates. I am in New Orleans and I have a 2014XK. I was even considering replacing each unit/ button over time but after checking pricing I nixed that idea.
After lots of thought and research I have found that simple hand lotion works the best!
These buttons need the oils in the lotion to breakdown the gummy layers.
Goof off, goo off, cleaners, etc is NOT the way to tackle this issue. Their harshness will remove the graphics.
i applied the lotion generously to the surface and gently scrapped away the gummy mess with my fingernail.
I don’t think I would use a brush as that may be too aggressive. The graphics were unharmed and now the buttons look and feel new. Use the tip of a toothpick to clean the crevices then a micro fiber cloth for the final wipe down.
Take your time on each area and you will get great results.
“Just my two cents”
This issue has driven me nuts forever. I used some goo gone and elbow grease a few months back to clean up a few areas but ran out of time and was left with a gummy mess on several buttons. I had a little time today and tried some hand lotion and a rag and damn if it didn't work perfectly. I still need to clean up the corners a bit but it was sooo much easier. You still have to be careful not to rub off the decals or paint with too vigorous of scrubbing but the lotion worked really well. THANKS!!!
I happen to have it sitting on the table next to me so specifically I used Target's store brand "up and up" extra healing ultra dry skin moisturizer. It says it compares to Jergen's. I was at Target with the wife and I knew that I was going be sitting in the car for 15 minutes so I though I should give it a shot so I basically just grabbed the plainest non-scented lotion I could find. I was shocked at how easy it was to do with a spare garage rag I had in the trunk. I just rubbed a little lotion on a few buttons and started rubbing away. It almost instantly softened up and wiped right off. Some of the edges are just a tiny bit sticky still but it looks 100% better.
Was going to use Goo Gone, but glad I checked the forums here first. Used some hand lotion, and scraped it off with my fingernail. Used a toothpick to get in the crevices. Worked great! Thanks BryanL
Just want to say thanks to the people who offered the lotion solution in this thread! That got my buttons cleaned up very easily and looking ritually new again!
