Default Tempermental Fluids

My engine and coolant had a huge fight. The coolant stormed out just as the wife and I were about to attend a Pittsburgh Symphony concert.

The outlet hoses to the EGR valve are known failure points as is the water outlet containing the thermostat.

I had a pipe go South just s I pulled into my driveway once on my old RR. I took it as a win not being stranded.

The culprit was the radiator fan controller.... stopped working, so when we arrived in Pittsburgh and had to sit in traffic the temperature started to rise. Part readily available!

Glad you found the problem. But where did the puddle in your picture come from? Was there a hose failure as well?

The problem didn't manifest until we got downtown and hit city traffic. Sitting negated any cooling effect from driving, so the coolant boiled over...it must have got pretty hot to lose that much.

Use a smart phone with the Torque app to connect the vehicle's PCM via the OBD port using a Bluetooth interface. You can then monitor the coolant temperature in real time since there's no gauge on the instrument cluster.

Something else you can do to help prolong the life of the plastic cooling system parts is to leave the bonnet open, or at least unlatched whilst parked to let the hot air escape quickly. Even though the XKR has bonnet louvres, hot air gets trapped along the cowl.

Scott -- you mention a fan controller. Was there a separate one, or did they do the entire fan assembly?

My mechanic listed it on my invoice as the radiator fan assembly for $1535.00

Certain there’s no issue with either water pump in the circuit? I’ve had fans fail but never have had a boil over.

It’s built into the assembly.
