Test drove the F Type V8S today...

I totally agree with Ghost, the front of the F-Type is stunning but the rear, I just don't like. For me its all about the next gen XK New Jaguar XK exclusive | Autocar , should be interesting what they do with it, but right now Jag have some of the best designers around, so I am keeping the faith.

I borrowed a 3.0S for an hour or so yesterday. Perhaps I am too self-conscious but I never have really understood convertibles unless it was for an occasional weekend toy so would wait for the coupe myself. I was driving into the late afternoon sun at one point and it was just coming over the top of the windscreen so was in my eyes and there was nothing I could do about it (makes mental note to get some prescription sun glasses). I put the hood up eventually and that made the windscreen seem quite small.
The exhaust note is loud especially if you let it go to the red line with the loud button pressed and dynamic mode on but the noise it makes whilst changing gear seems a bit too fake and I much prefer the deeper tone of a V8. They had a V8 in the showroom and started it up for me and that sounds incredible! With the hood up, the exhaust on the 3.0L seems loud enough to be annoying but not loud enough to be enjoyable. The popping on the overrun was fun though.
I was gobsmacked to find out that the standard seat has a manual adjustment for fore/aft movement especially as it doesn't look like much effort has been made to reduce weight elsewhere. I couldn't live without my memory seats now!
The touch screen is a big improvement although I didn't get a chance to play with it too much.
The ride was harder than that of my XKR but I could easily live with it and it was very easy to drive as well.
In fact, my '07 XKR really felt its age when I got back in to it but I prefer the roominess of it, if you can call an XK roomy, so would be more inclined to see what the next XK is like and either go for one of those or one of the last of the current ones, especially if the next XK looks like some of the mock ups!
There definitely seems to be room in the range for both cars and I would have thought that the Boxster is the more obvious car to compare the F-Type to than the 911.
The salesman mentioned that he had been to a regional sales meeting recently and they had a concept of the F-Type coupe there. He was under the impression that there might be a 2+2 option of it although I can't see the rear seats being of any use if they do.
He also said that there would be one more facelift of the XK along with an upgrade to the 8 speed gearbox.

Thanks for that review.
Convertibles really are the perfect weekend toy in that they are ideal for fun and pure pleasure. Of course lots of people want that weekend fun feeling on nice days during their work week as well. Some free spirits actually want that feeling each and every day! And if you're retired every day is Saturday, tomorrow is Sunday, and the vert is perfect for the weekend that never ends Sunglasses, hat and sunscreen required, cooled seats recommended.
What do you mean by... "With the hood up, the exhaust on the 3.0L seems loud enough to be annoying but not loud enough to be enjoyable."?
I keep hearing there's an all-new XK in the works, but this indicates it may be a couple of years off if true..."He also said that there would be one more facelift of the XK along with an upgrade to the 8 speed gearbox.". I like that idea as the XK seems as desirable as ever, even in today's crowded market place!

The rag top on the F-Type doesn't have as much sound proofing so the exhaust is more intrusive and I am not so fond of the pitch of it. At least the one I borrowed had the switchable exhaust so you can make it a bit quieter but it still seemed to drone.
A friend of mine bought a Lotus Elise when they first came out and for the first 20 minutes or so it was fun to be in then we hit the motorway for an hour or so. The drone got a bit tiring and it was very hard to talk. The F-Type obviously isn't that bad but some days you just want to drive from A to B without fuss. It would be great as a weekend car though, especially the V8. I don't have enough space in my garage, or the spare cash, so I will stick with the XKR, and I get to drive it every day
