Hopefully the government will start back up and open the Grand Canyon in time for you!

I'm also a little curious about how things work in US. Since I'm Swedish I don't really know how it works. Is ebay the best place to look for a car or any other recommendations?
Is a place like this a good place to buy a car?
Land Rover & Jaguar in San Francisco, CA | British Motorcar Distributors
Buying it in SF would be great so I have a nice roadtrip home :=D

Is the price you see there the exact price or will taxes etc be added?

I'm mainly looking for a convertible..even though I think the coupé looks nice :=)

Cheers,
Daniel

I am a licensed car dealer in florida.

State sales tax Tag and registration are extra. If you are going to drive the car in california there is no way to avoid sales tax, however if you have it transported on a trailer to denver you will pay whatever the tax rate is in colorado.

Colorado may have a lower rate, some states also have a limit on the maximum price of sales tax (south carolina is $300)

My advice is because you will be moving be very careful with private sellers, be sure to call your local DMV with the title number and VIN to have it checked out. California is notorious for stolen cars, title fraud, odometer fraud and worst of all people selling cars that still have a lien on the title.

If possible only buy from a reputable car dealer, be sure they are bonded and insured. In case it all goes wrong you can go after their bond the get your money back.

Also if you are not completely confident in your knowledge about automotive mechanics, have the car inspected by a repair shop, preferably a jaguar specialist.

Autotrader.com, cars.com, and ebay are all good sites for buying cars. You should go check out your local jaguar dealerships also.
Dealers do not always post their entire inventory online and you may be lucky enough to find a cheap trade-in at a jaguar dealership.

Good luck and be careful.

Sales tax is usually only charged by the state issuing the plate. Cali has a way to charge sales tax without issuing a plate if he drives it off the lot? They should be able to issue a 30 day temp tag. He'll just have to make sure he goes to the Colorado DMV as soon as he gets there.

So it looks like I'm flying to LA on Thursday to take a look at the car and hopefully driving it home. Pretty much everything is settled so now it is time to start planning the actual trip back to Denver.
Buying it from a known well thought of dealer and will have a temp tag for driving back to Denver.
Now let's hope the Jag is in such a good shape I think it is and that the government solve all their issues so I can actually see stuff on the way back :=D

Excited!!! *many happy jumping smileys that I don't know how to put here

Hey Daniel! They are 19" rims and...... I would have like the 20" tires, but think it might be better to go with this one :=)

/Daniel
19'' wheels will be OK for a while and after the ''Summer tires'' wil be done. you can always switch to 20 '' for summer and stay on 19 for winter. Anyway, after a few winters to wheels will be afected by salt. Plus, during winter you like to have more rubber under the whell to absorb potholes.Living in Quebec, I can tell you a lot about all the dommage the salt can do to a nice car...

On the effeciency of summer tires in snow, I'll tell you that winter tires are a MUST to me. Using WT or ST cost the same thing. After a few ears, the only cost is to switch them. Wint WT you minimize the chance to get in trouble...

Have a go trip

Again, thanks to everyone that has helped me and a big thanks to Barrett at Hornburg for helping with everything.
I must say I am right now the happiest car owner on the planet.
This car is perfection! :=D :=D :=D

Haha pics are coming up as soon as I get my computer so I can get my pics :=D

Comparing the 2000 and 2010 is like comparing your new hot, comfortable girlfriend with your now older high school sweetheart.
The 2000 is and will always be one of the most beautiful cars ever made and makes it tingle in my chest every time I see her. The 2010 is just so comfortable compared with all the new techs and cool stuff. Both are really fast and fun but all the gadgets makes the 2010 a lot more practical.

How was the sales tax handled? Did you have to pay both CA & CO sales tax? Also, how much of that $54K was the warranty?

I'm hoping to make a purchase in a few months.

Sales tax is only charged in the state the car will be registered in. There is no such thing as double sales tax.

You mean like when you pay tax to buy it - tax to register it, tax to inspect it and personal property tax all in the same year with money that you've paid state and federal income taxes on?

technically you can deduct sales and state tax from your taxable income when you report your federal return. <disclaimer: not a tax attorney, don't really know what I'm talking about.>

Hey - When you add all the applicable taxes that apply to the product you are buying including sales, license fees, income taxes, etc. About 50+% of every dollar you spend goes for taxes.

Holy crap, you think you're taxed up the whazooo in the US. Come to Canada. When I imported my XKR I was hit with an additional 6.1% duty because Jaguar Cars are not manufactured in North America (NAFTA). On top of the 6.1%, I was charged another 15% sales tax. So. the equation looks like this for a $100,000 car, (($100,000*1.61)*1.15). So my $100,000 car quickly became a $122,000 car. And it doesn't end there. Before adding all the taxes a currency conversion is required to covert the $'s to Canadian dollars which adds another 8.5% before adding all the taxes. In current Canadian $'s the $100,000US car would cost me $132,000 to park it in my driveway. Of course this is not considering the income tax you've already paid to afford the $100,000 car.

Nothing else kills an economy more than high tax. I should have stayed in Southern California. Sooo much tax in Canada. However, I'm afraid the free ride in the US may come to a screeching stop when the national debt is responsibly dealt with by increasing you know what...

Scott,

Did I miss the description of the car? 2010 XKR... Color, coupe or convertible, options (radar cruise control, etc)?

Are you not loving it? I did the same as you a few years back, flew from San Francisco to Houston, bought a low mile CPO XKR Coupe (silver), and drove it cross country back to San Francisco... A great way to get acquainted with a new car, especially one as perfectly crafted for long cross-state driving in speed an luxury.

I remember being most impressed with the magnetic shocks, the crazy torque, and the mad dual-nature of the car, from soft & silent to rock hard and loud...

Be careful with your speed though... Remember that a silent 2,500 RPM is pushing 90 mph. With the absence of wind noise and the magnetic ride, you loose sense of speed quickly, and American highway police are experts at 'revenue extraction' (aka traffic enforcement).

Post a pic or two and have fun,

Skeeter
